Since antiquity onyx has been used as a protection against black magic. Onyx works on the psyche, deflecting negative energy, increasing the wearer’s stamina, and giving the wearer inner harmony. Onyx is a protective stone worn when facing adversaries in battles of conflicts of all kinds, or while hurrying down a dark street late at night. In classical ceremonial magic, the image of the head of the god Mars or a figure of the hero Hercules was engraved on onyx and carried for courage. Indians and Persians believed that wearing onyx protected them from the evil eye, and that placing onyx on the stomach of a pregnant woman in labor would reduce the labor pain and bring on earlier delivery.
Black Onyx is wonderful for meditation and dreaming. When using Black Onyx for either of these purposes, it is recommended to use a secondary grounding stone, i.e., hematite & smoky quartz, in combination with the Onyx. Black Onyx helps one to become master of their own future.
Onyx is used to start psychic attacks, particularly those of a sexual nature. It is said to be unsafe for expectant mother, causing miscarriages, but in India the opposite is true and onyx protect against the evil eye and eases childbirth. Today, onyx is said to help in difficult conditions. Enhances memories belonging to the wearer and it is useful for healing old traumas.
Black Onyx enhances steadfastness and determination, setting ones mind to a task. It is grounding stone, valuable in difficult or confusing times in our lives. Extremely helpful to people who are in the process of " letting go" or releasing the past attachments to "people , places and things.
Onyx works really well with other stones by consolidating their various energies. Onyx helps one integrate religious meanings into their lives. With Phenacite and other visionary stones, it aids in grounding their functionality into the physical world.
Since ancient Egyptian times, onyx has been stained to improve or change its color. Natural black onyx is rare, so the commercial black variety is usually agate that has been stained by the sugar-sulfuric acid treatment, soaked in sugar and then heated in sulfuric acid to carbonize the sugar. It may be banded or solid black.
