Smokeless Energetic Clearing Options
We, and the spaces we occupy, are vibrating with energy currents that are very sensitive to outside forces. These forces can affect us in many ways – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. We often carry the heavy energies and burdens of the world around us, including the presence of negativity, or energy that doesn’t belong to or resonate with us. We may experience these disturbances as fatigue, irritation, or other emotional upheavals that seem to make no sense. You are not the originator of everything you feel and think. Sometimes, you’ve simply picked up fragments and forms of energy that are not yours, which explains why, at times, your feelings and reactions are nonsensical. Not your circus, not your monkeys as they say.
Energetic clearing is an ancient spiritual practice, used and trusted worldwide for millennia. Purifying the environment is a critical first step in any sacred ritual, as well as an important way to complete and seal sacred work. It is especially important to exercise this practice in your daily life – at home, work, in your vehicle…the places you spend most of your time. Clearing low vibrations and stuck energies creates a peaceful, beautiful etheric temple, within and without.
Burning sacred herbs and resins is perhaps the most time-tested method for energetically (and sometimes physically) cleansing a space, but there are other effective alternatives; smoke is not required to sanctify yourself or a space.
There are many situations where smudging cannot be used. Business and property owners implement rules and regulations prohibiting fire and smoke. Serious allergies, intolerances, and other health conditions are often induced and aggravated by the presence of smoke. And some people simply do not enjoy it – and there is no reason they should have to endure it. It’s important to understand these common reasons for employing smokeless energetic clearing options, like a smudging spray. But now, let’s get to the fun stuff – exploring the rainbow of amazing, delightful, magical and efficacious smudging alternatives for smoke-free purification rituals.
Smudge Spray
Smudge spray not only clears your space, it fills the air with fragrance, raising vibrations and evoking sensual pleasure. You can buy smudge spray or experiment with making your own. Pure ingredients such as white sage oil and organic wild harvested Palo Santo are ideal elements to utilize. White sage oil is considered a ceremonial herb, known in ancient times for its ability to call in spirits of light and serve as a veil to keep lower vibrating energies at bay. White sage has many healing properties and has been used as a natural antimicrobial to purify and cleanse. Palo Santo literally means sacred wood. It is commonly found in Peru, and has been used by South American indigenous tribes as medicine, and to diffuse unwanted energies, for centuries. These two powerful ingredients blended and infused with wild lavender and rose witch hazel can create the perfect all-purpose smudge spray, which can be used any time, any place. Click here for a list of sacred herbs for smudging, including my favorites. Many of these are available in essential oil form, which you can combine to craft your own signature spray.
Sea Salt
Salt has forever been associated with cleansing and blessing. With salt, you can create your own ocean of profound cleansing and healing. Recipes vary, and ultimately, trust your own intuition in choosing specific ingredients and their quantity. As a general rule, adding two or three handfuls of good quality, unrefined sea salt to a tub of bathwater works well. Try adding a few drops of essential oil and fresh or dried rose petals and lavender as well. Create a nurturing, soothing ritual in the way that is perfect for you – surrounding yourself with smells, sounds and sights that bring you joy and peace. Set forth positive intentions and express gratitude for your complete cleansing and renewal. Remember to rinse off, at least briefly, after your bath, to ensure any toxins wash away. You can also dissolve salt in a bowl of water and allow it to absorb negativity, or sprinkle the salt water around your home to achieve the same effect.
Clearing Candles
Using clearing candles to shift the energy in your space is another of my favorite tools. You invoke great magic when using clearing candles in ceremonial activity. During meditation, focus on the flame, while invoking the presence of light spirit energy. You can also carry the lit candle to each corner of a room, representing the four directions of east, west, north, and south, harnessing the power of fire to clear any unwanted energies from your space. Fire has been used for eons by both ancient and modern cultures to dispel darkness, banish negative spirits, and clear away unwanted energy.
Himalayan Salt Crystals
Himalayan salt rock is gorgeous and amazing in its ability to absorb negative energy – and it’s a form of edible crystal. It is used to release attachments, and recommended for those working in negative environments. Pink Himalayan salt is a fixture in all the rooms of my home. Himalayan salt crystals are actual mineral material that are part of the primordial sea, buried underwater in the thermal ocean landscape for more than 300 million years as they formed. As the mountains now known as the Himalayas rose from under the Earth’s surface, these salt crystals were exposed. Himalayan salt releases negative ions. Today’s modern environment is often saturated with pollutants, including electromagnetic waves, which carry a positive charge. This salt helps keep the air around you cleansed and balanced. You can crush Himalayan salt crystals and add them to water for bathing, or to wash floors. Place salt rock pieces (or salt crystals in bowls) in the four corners of a room, or anywhere you want to absorb negative energy and cleanse the area. Salt lamps are especially useful, because warm salt crystal emits a higher number of negative ions, delivering a more efficient ionizing effect.
Blessed Water
You can make your own blessed or holy water by leaving a container of water outside to soak up the sunlight, moonlight, and/or starlight. Turn this practice into a magical, enchanting tradition, connecting you with the sky, Earth, and elements. Try choosing a special time each month (like Full Moon) to bless and charge your water. Using a glass, jar or vase of sentimental or ancestral value, infuse your water with essential oils and herbs to enhance its cleansing and healing properties and honor this sacred practice. Use your blessed water as a splash or spray, or however you feel called to purify and raise vibrations.
Crystal Clearing Grid
If you love working with gemstones and crystals, you will appreciate the power of creating a clearing grid. These grids are an important part of the work I do, and a surefire way to keep high vibrating energies in, and low vibrating energies out. Gridding serves as a protective energetic force field, promoting safety and peace. I particularly use black kyanite, petalite, kunzite, clear quartz points, Himalayan salt, and calcite for their protective and healing properties. I create a geometric pattern using the gemstones and crystals, placing them around a selenite bowl that serves to hold the center of energy. You can place these beautiful and effectual clearing grids anywhere you want to increase your feelings of safety and protection, and they are also aesthetically alluring.
Nature – Fresh Air and Sunshine
The power within nature to purify and renew is astounding. We know that simply standing on, or sitting upon the Earth will ground us. Most of us have experienced a moment in the rain, perhaps in a torrential downpour, when we felt washed clean, as if baptized under the clouds. And the Sun, radiating warmth and light that illuminates the darkness, is known to improve our mood and transmute negative or stagnant energies. Air/wind blowing or moving through a space is also very effective in clearing and cleansing. Open the blinds, windows and doors and invite nature in with intention. Express gratitude for the complete removal of all negativity and renewed vibrancy. Get outside and take a walk, inhaling fresh, purifying energy, and exhaling anything you need to release.
Sound – Bells, Chimes, Singing Bowls, Voice
Sound vibrations break up stagnant energy. There are many ways to utilize sound to clear yourself and your space, and to permeate the environment with the highest vibrations, even tapping into Angelic Realms. Use chimes, bells, singing bowls, drums, or rattles to move energy sonically. Adding vocal prayer, intention and invocation will further amplify the process. One example of an elegant and portable sound-clearing tool is the Tingsha. Tingshas are made of two small cymbals connected by a leather cord or metal chain. They are used by Tibetan Buddhist practitioners in prayers and rituals. When these cymbals are struck together, they produce a clear, high pitched tone. Among other instruments, I use crystal singing bowls in my practice. They are so gorgeous, and you can feel their vibrations reverberating throughout your entire being. Singing bowls are potent energy transformers that can connect us with a multitude of Higher Realm frequencies. And don’t underestimate the power of your voice. You do not need to be a talented singer to cast forth your voice and shift vibrations. Your chimes, bells, bowls and other instruments delight in your song. Expect to experience seriously magical moments when you vocalize with them. Chanting, humming, and simple sounds such as “OM” can be used to connect with the Cosmic Hum. While you might feel self-conscious and inhibited at first, letting sound, in its most natural form, emanate from your body will serve you well. It releases energy that needs to be freed, and instinctually resounds in the perfect pitch, tone, and note to bring harmony internally and externally. Let go, and let it out! Sing, beloveds, and rejoice in your song.
Above all, let your intuition and inner wisdom guide you to the methods of clearing that serve your Greatest Good in each moment. Know that you truly don’t need anything outside yourself for sanctification. You are inherently pure and connected with everything you need. But self-discovery is a dynamic process, and tools are fantastic allies to support you along the way.
Meditation, invocation, and visualization are other effective smudging alternatives – and there are many more as well, beyond those explored in the space of this blog. Consider this your primer, dear ones. Absorb it, and then venture out and discover your own ways and methods. And then share them with others – thus completing the Holy Circle.
To get you started, as an introduction to one method I think you may enjoy – if you have not yet experienced the peace and joy it provides – I invite you to partake in this 12-minute guided meditation which will help you filter unwanted energies from your aura. If you feel drained by other people’s energies and exposed to low vibrations, you will find this meditation restorative and healing. Let this be my magical gift to you. Allow it to take you by the hand and lead you toward your first step down a path that will blessedly become a lifelong journey of cleansing, purification, and grace. Aho. Amen. And so it is.
