Essential Oils for Magic

How to Use Essential Oils for Magic

People have been using essential oils for centuries to usher in their desires for good luck, prosperity, health, romance and practically any wish you can think of. You can do the same by learning how to use essential oils for magic.

Think about the last time you were around a large group of people. You may have noticed that some of those people left you feeling good while some of those people left you feeling not-so-good. What is it that conjures up these feelings? It is the energy that surrounds those individuals.

People aren’t the only beings who have energy that can uplift us or deplete us. Plants also have energy that can be used to help us enhance our lives.   Essential oils are essences from plants that impart those energetic qualities. When we work with essential oils, we are consciously inviting the properties from those essences into our lives.

If you’re looking for the definitive guidebook on how to use essential oils, it is important to know that there is not one right way. There are plenty of suggestions, but you should always allow your intuition to play a role in any magical or metaphysical work that you do. Sure, you can read a recipe or formula or spell in a book and follow it to the letter to get decent results, but I’ve always found that if I’m intuitively guided to make a small change and I follow that urge, I end up being happier with my outcome.

How to use essential oils for magical work

The first thing you must do when working with essential oils is have the right intention. You have to have a purpose to what you are doing. If you’re just playing around and don’t really believe essential oils can do anything for you, they probably won’t.

With the right intentions, there are a number of ways you can go. First of all, you want to know what properties a particular oil has. For example, cedarwood is an oil that is good for enhancing one’s spirituality. Ylang ylang is known for its energetic properties that promote love and sex. If you’re seeking more financial success in your life, you might want to get some patchouly. A good book to start learning about essential oils and what various oils are good for is The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews by Scott Cunningham.

Once you know what oils you want to work with, you are on your way. Here is how to use essential oils to bring about your intentions.

You can wear them. Essential oils can give you an added boost on a given day. However, you should never put essential oils on your skin directly as they might irritate the skin. Instead, you should dilute them. You do that by using about 1/8 a cup of a base oil such as almond, sunflower, jojoba, grapeseed or safflower oil. Then use a dropper to add a drop or two of the essential oils you want to work with. I use small bottles such as these. By doing this, you protect your skin while benefiting from the magical properties of the essential oils that you are using. To mix the base oils and essential oils, simply swirl the bottle gently in a clockwise direction so the liquids can mix tougher.

You can put them in your bath water. A drop of an essential oil in your bath water can energize you with the properties of the oils that you’re using. Since the bath water itself will dilute the oil, there is typically no need to use a base oil, but remember, less is more. A drop added to your bath water will suffice.

You can use them for candle magic rituals. One of my favorite uses of essential oils is for candle magic. I create a blend that is designed to work toward a particular purpose. For example, I recently needed a lot of home repairs at the same time. I had a problem with a sink and then my water pump needed to be replaced. I decided to create an essential oil blend that would bring about some much-needed money quickly. I used the following recipe from the book I referenced earlier Income, Oils & Brews:

  • 7 drops of Patchouly
  • 5 drops of Cedarwood
  • 4 drops of Vetivert
  • 2 drops of Ginger
  • 1/8 cup of Almond Oil

Then, I got a green candle (to represent money and abundance) and dressed the candle with my oil. (Dressing a candle is basically rubbing oil on the candle. If you want to bring something to you, start from the top of the candle and rub your hands from the top to the middle of the candle. Then go to the bottom of the candle and rub upwards back to the middle. If you want to get rid of something in your life, when you dress your candle, you start from the middle of the candle and rub your hands upwards. Then go back to the middle of the candle and rub your hands downward.) I then burned the candle.

You can use oils to enhance your crystals. If you work with crystals to bring about changes in your life, give that energy an added boost by rubbing essential oils on your crystals. You want to make sure that the oils you choose have properties that complement the crystal. For example, if you used an oil that promoted high energy and you paired it with a crystal that is used to calm you down, the two would have opposing intentions and would likely cancel each other out.

The best way to discover how to use essential oils for magic is to experiment. As you try things that work, write them down in your journal or a notebook that can become your own personal Book of Shadows.
