An Astrological Overview of August 2023

As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.
The Overview for August
This year the month of August features Venus retrograde, promising a review of all things Venusian through a Leo lens! The month begins with Mercury conjunct Venus and both the nozzles of the special evolutionary configuration known as a “Yod” made by their quincunxes to Neptune and Pluto. A Yod, or “Finger of God,” involves “expansion through sacrifice,” with Venus and then Mercury as the focal points for that productive sacrificial energy.
This Yod was made first in early July via Mars, then in mid-and late July via Venus, and the end of July and early August via Mercury. All of these will be “made clear” by the Sun around August 20-22. Be willing to eliminate all which doesn’t integrate well with the new life you’re becoming; what is squeezed out is what we no longer need.
August marks the closest Neptune sextile with Pluto in 30 years. This year Neptune at “the end of the end” of Pisces is giving us all a sense of vast feelings and finality, and with Pluto at “the end of the end” of Capricorn, it brings a strong sense of the past “coming to present” between now and January, when Pluto returns to Aquarius.
Uranus is now at its forward threshold in Taurus, and when retrograde it will re-trace “awakened ground” we have experienced since May. The last decan of Taurus brings grounded power, and as Mars makes a favorable aspect to Uranus the first 26 days of August, it should be great for detailed practical activity which may go through a few adjustments during Mercury retrograde, but which will ultimately turn out fine by late September.
With Uranus in late Taurus, Neptune in late Pisces, and Pluto in late Capricorn, we have a very strong “double sextile/trine” which should favorably impact all planets we have in the last 8 degrees of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. The Spiritual Field represented by these outermost planets are helping stabilize our late Earth and Water sectors, preparing us for an entirely new experience of Spirit and Life in 2025 when these Spiritual powerhouses shift out of Earth and Water into Fire and Air, joined by Saturn when it enters Aries.
August begins with four planets retrograde, with Mercury stationary retrograde on August 23. As this station occurs at the exact degree where Saturn went retrograde in December 2008, it profoundly affected developments throughout 2009 and 2010, so there may be flashes of memories related to the “venerable standards” we examined for use in our Soul-ful life which began then. This month Pluto gives us the power to “read the tea leaves” and find meaning in objects. Neptune continues to promise future abundance if by late August through September we use our creative imagination to “dominate circumstances.”
This month continues to bring us more non-lunar oppositions, with Mercury opposed Saturn the first week of August, Mars opposed Neptune the third week, and the Sun opposed
Saturn the last week. This year the inner planet oppositions to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will continue until the December Solstice, so expect a lot of worldly and spiritual realizations to come forth these next 5 months, along with oppositional situations requiring clarity about both poles to find ways to resolve that opposition.
The good thing going on is that the Leo squares to Uranus release the positive energies stabilized by Mars and then Mercury trine Jupiter and Uranus, activating the harmonizing of planets we have in the third decan of the Earth and Water signs. At the beginning of the month Mercury opposed Saturn followed by a trine to Jupiter brings productive stabilization to planets we have in the first decan of Earth and Water signs. Late in the month Sun opposed Saturn with Sun tredecile Jupiter and Jupiter quintile Saturn brings high specialization, so it’s a great month for those with planets in Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. All in all, a very positive and productive period of intensification, enlarged awareness of the practical and emotional sectors of life, and a time of simple, stable preparation for a life renewal in January.
Mercury goes retrograde at 22 Virgo in late August, so prepare to review your Virgo sector with an eye to adjusting what needs adjusting to demonstrate your skill or precision in response. When Mercury went SRX at 16 Taurus in April and SD at 6 Taurus in May, we got a front end look at Jupiter’s coming retrograde period which also starts at 16 Taurus and ends at 6 Taurus. The themes of both these retrogrades is teaching us that the major theme for the entire period of April 2023 through March 2024 is that old answers can’t confirm the new conditions, and old approaches won’t get the job done. Find new approaches, new attitudes, new understanding, and don’t worry about the past.
With so much Leo and Virgo, this month play at your work and work at your play, and remember that “to rule is to serve.” What are you serving which sets your creativity free? What do you need to review or reflect on to liberate your love, your heart, or your spontaneity? The Sun with Venus in Leo shows we can enjoy life to the fullest as we come to terms with echoes of Venusian memories and experiences flashing on our perceptual radar; Mercury and Mars in Virgo promises fantastic efficiency and the ability to get things done both with style and attention to detail. Just don’t let your wheels grind things to dust, and play a little!
As Venus spends the entire month retrograding through the last 2/3 of Leo, take a new look at all which inhibits your ability to be light, bright, and creative! With Venus retrograde, expect returns of all things Venusian! Some will find fond memories of friends long gone, others will remember old creativity which can be resurrected for current expression. Maybe the return of old likes, old loves, old affections, old forms of play, or old friends.
This month all the inner planets transit Leo and Virgo, with Mars in Virgo blazing a trail through late Virgo and early Libra, heralding transits of Mercury, the Sun, and eventually Venus later this Autumn. That means the outer planet occupied zone of Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn and Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus is now expressed through the inner planets in Leo and Virgo on the other side of the zodiac, creating a “See Saw” pattern which will last for several weeks when the Moon is between Capricorn and Taurus or in Leo and Virgo.
When the inner planets transit Capricorn through Taurus and conjunct the outer planets, it’s a time to pull the energies inward, and when they’re between Cancer and Scorpio it creates different dynamics in how the energies express. Because the inner planets are now forming oppositions to the outer planets, we are seeing the externalization of those spiritual energies in the houses the inner planets are transiting.
Remember the first 16 days of the month are still under the influence of the July New Moon at 25 Cancer, helping us accept some sort of power or blessing to take the lead in some important social or emotional setting. This evolving personality integration will come to fruition after the August 1 Full Moon at 10 Leo/Aquarius. The last 2 weeks of the month is under the influence of the August 16 New Moon at 24 Leo, bringing concentration and focus on inner things at the expense of outer things. As it’ll exactly square Uranus, show compassion, focus, self-transcendence, and a sense of service to a greater vision.
When Jupiter entered Aries in May 2022 we launched into a new era which became a dominant theme when Mars conjuncted Jupiter in late May 2022 at 4 Aries. That conjunction began a 2 year cycle of learning how to enjoy life more naturally on our own terms. When Jupiter revisited that conjunction point in late January it accelerated the growth of that energy, renewing its fiery expression. This month helps us understand and express those Aries themes in Leo ways showing us the creative and/or playful power of that conjunction.
Jupiter moving through Taurus gives a Taurus backdrop to planets we have in Sagittarius and Pisces, as well as the houses where we have these signs on the cusp. As it now rules Saturn and makes the specializing quintile all month, open to the quintessence of things, remembering that as we learn to master life’s tests we become stronger for the effort.
Saturn is now retrograde and continues to bring deep and vast feeling energies to planets, points, or house cusps we have in Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn’s retrograde station promises all of us “a call to renewal” wherever we have early Pisces. This is the beginning of a new life which will unfold quickly in early 2024.
Speaking of another long wave Aries energy in our charts, Jupiter launched a major healing and mentoring cycle when it conjuncted Chiron at 15 Aries on March 11. That began a long wave Chiron cycle which will last until the Summer of 2036. As an aside, when Chiron transits between Aquarius and Gemini, it moves relatively slowly and has conjunctions with Jupiter about every 13 years. However, it can take 19-20 years for the next conjunction after Gemini or Cancer. That means once the conjunction at 16 Gemini happens in the Summer of 2036, then we won’t have another conjunction of Jupiter and Chiron until the Spring of 2056 in Aquarius.
Because Jupiter rules Pisces, this month Saturn will have a steady Taurus feel. As Jupiter is heralding where Saturn will transit in a few years, we’re all getting a sense of corners to be turned later this decade when Saturn transits Taurus and makes the waxing square to the December 2020 Jupiter/Saturn conjunction point at 1 Aquarius. That conjunction ended a 200 year Earth era and began a 200 year Air era, and set the sociocultural conditions for the greater Aquarian 20 year era now developing.
Planets Slowing Down, Speeding Up, or Shifting Signs
This month Mercury is “crashing into retrograde” through the Inferior conjunction with the Sun in early September at 14 Virgo, after which it will begin to speed up. Venus is now retrograde, with its theme of “longing for a new life” at a “critical point in emergent evolution.” It began wherever we have 29 Leo, and is opening an entirely new perspective on all things related to Venus in our lives.
Mars continues to accelerate after its direct station at 9 Gemini in mid-January. Jupiter is now rapidly slowing, preparing to go retrograde in early September. Saturn and Neptune both are retrograde, and Uranus is slowing to go retrograde in late August.
In August we have only two planets changing signs. This month the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Leo and Virgo), and Mars, ruler of Aries and Scorpio, will give us two (Virgo and Libra) .
Mars
As noted, Mars continues to pick up speed by the week. It went stationary direct at 9 Gemini in January, with a theme of being a Zen archer, sure in your aim as a result of your training between September 2022 and February 2023. This will be a theme for this year and 2024. Mars is now in Virgo, helping us find precision in how we do what we do. The “explosion of energy” in Leo leads us to learn Virgo lessons of “significant form” according to Rudhyar.
This month Mars activates the house(s) where we have 14 Virgo to 3 Libra. Mars is happy in Virgo, since that sign is in harmony with Mars’ exaltation in Capricorn. Mars in Virgo helps us practice precision, knowing what to do and when to do it. Once it enters Libra, its sign of exile, we’ll become more moderate and tentative in our responses, which is great for being diplomatic and even-handed in our responses.
Mars begins August making a trine to Jupiter and as noted before, makes a trine to Uranus through the first four weeks of the month, favoring practical planning and helping us understand what is valuable and what is no longer relevant. There are rewards coming for “bravery under fire,” with the end of the month dominated by Mars trine Pluto and opposed Neptune, creating a need to mobilize to deal with “an unexpected storm raging through a canyon.”
Many things Mars sets into motion in August will be realized in September or early October, though the “payoff” may not come until late October or early November. Enjoy working the plan while making adjustments when needed.
The first 10 days of August, Mars is in the Capricorn decan of Virgo, ruled by Saturn with an extra dose of Venus. From August 10 through 27, Mars is in the Taurus decan of Virgo, ruled by Venus with an extra dose of Mercury. The last 4 days of the month, Mars is in the Libra decan of Libra, ruled by Venus with an extra dose of the Moon.
Between August 1-10, Mars will prove agitating to those with planets between 14-20 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Between August 11-20, it will have the same effect on planets between 21-26 Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. And between August 21-30, it will agitate planets between 26-30 Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces and 1-3 Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.
As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating from a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force. Hard aspects to/from Mars always require that we moderate or antidote impulsiveness and impatience.
Sign Focus
This month the sign focus again shows a preponderance of Leo and Virgo. We begin the month with the Sun and Venus in Leo, and Mercury and Mars in Virgo. This continues for most of the month until the Sun enters Virgo on August 23 followed by Mars’ entry into Libra on August 27.
So the first 23 days of the month features two visible planets each in Taurus, Leo, and Virgo. The last week the Sun strengthens Virgo and Mars leaves Virgo to enter Libra, introducing that sign for the year. So this month there’s very little sign shifting, since only two planets change signs. This stability will hold through September, with October bringing 4 planets changing signs.
We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set – The Bigger Picture
We’re still in the initial years of a new era in human evolution. The Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.
We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, 20 Gemini, 11 Taurus, and 2 Scorpio, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated, 11 Taurus will help us remove “weeds from our garden of Life and Mind,” and the recent one at 2 Scorpio is helping us release attachments from the past as we enter a more complex social experience.
The May 2022 eclipses with Sun in Taurus have begun to shut down old value systems in that sector, as well as the Scorpio sector via the May Full Moon Wesak Festival eclipse. November’s Total Lunar Eclipse Full Moon at 17 Taurus/Scorpio has helped us tap our spiritual power to transform our lower self and our worldly expression. The Scorpio Solar and Lunar eclipses are already leading us to say goodbye to the past, giving up some old ideals, and finding a new perspective on how and when to do things. You can find out more about Solar and Lunar eclipses by going to the archives on how eclipses work.
The April-May 2023 eclipses have begun to work their magic on our Aries and Libra sectors for quite a while to come. The Solar eclipse at 30 Aries is sure to shut down some elements wherever we have that in our charts, and the eclipses later this year will be the last in the Taurus/Scorpio sector with another one coming in our Libra sector.
As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.
Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month
August begins under the influence of the July New Moon at 25 Cancer. Where that falls in our charts shows where we are learning to accept a blessing or power in some leadership role. These themes will be brought to fruition beginning at the Full Moon of August 1, which will bring some sort of relief or transfiguration after an ordeal externalized as a “disappointment” which helps us withdraw from our projections on the world or another’s projections on us.
The first week of the month shows Mars trine Jupiter, Mercury opposed Saturn, and Sun square Jupiter. That would make Jupiter very powerful and favorable, so don’t get lost in rigid or narrow thinking or ideas. During this week the Moon moves from Aquarius to Taurus, putting the focus on that area of our charts. As it makes conjunctions to Saturn and Neptune, it renews those planetary energies.
The Full Moon on August 1 will be a T-Square with Jupiter, throwing the void into mid-Scorpio. It should be good for finding a deeper compassion, as well as clarity about what we want to do and how we want to do it. We have another Fixed T-square on August 2, with Moon opposed Venus RX squaring Uranus, again throwing the void into late Scorpio. Keep the big picture in mind as you eliminate all you no longer need internally and externally.
These T-squares move into favorable opposition, sextile, and trine configurations with the Moon in Pisces on August 3-4 with the weekend of August 4-6 dynamic with the Moon in Aries trine the Sun and Venus. Just get clear about what role(s) you’re playing and how to keep the momentum in your own hands.
The second week of August begins with the very favorable Moon in Taurus making Grand Earth trines, favoring the development of all kinds of things! Even though Venus is square Uranus, we already experienced it once before when direct, so this is a revisiting of that release of genius. Coupled with Mercury trine Jupiter, open up your practical imagination and you should see “the plan” clearly.
Moon in Gemini August 9-11 favors discovering all we need to make progress, with understanding, healing, and mentoring in the air via the Sun trine Chiron. The Moon in Cancer on August 11-13 is very favorable for all sorts of things, and the Inferior conjunction of Venus with the Sun on August 13 will make it clear what’s ego-driven and what’s not. In any case, if something “doesn’t fly,” you can’t make it fly by pushing it.
Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month
The second half of the month begins a very intense time, with Venus trine Chiron helping us heal old wounds, and Sun square Uranus as Mars trines Uranus, showing brilliance with the need to express our hearts. If tempted to make an excuse for non-action, instead just do it! August 16 brings the New Moon with themes of concentrating on the inner at the expense of the outer to contact and bring forth inner powers of some sort.
The Moon enters Virgo August 16 and stays there until August 19, with a need for clarity and caution when Moon conjuncts Mercury and Mars on August 18. Moon in Libra August 19-21 shows a lot of adjustments, so stay balanced and sacrifice whatever you need to in order to maintain equilibrium, especially since Sun is quincunx Neptune beginning the Solar Yod which completes after it quincunxes Pluto on August 21.
The fourth week begins with Venus square Jupiter, showing we have to hang in there despite the cross currents. Put your best self forward and don’t settle for less than the best! August 22 also brings Mars opposed Neptune, showing a need to get clear about what we can and cannot do within the collective atmosphere we’re experiencing. August 23 brings the Sun’s entry into Virgo and Mercury going stationary retrograde, so change is in the air. Prepare for a review of all things Virgo, and be clear about what is ending and what needs to be accepted that week.
The fourth week shows the Moon between Libra and Aquarius, giving us new ways of approaching experience. The Moon in Scorpio is extraordinarily favorable, as it creates an evolutionary configuration known as a Rectangle, with Moon opposed Jupiter and Uranus with Mercury and Mars opposing Neptune. This double sextile, double trine, double opposition configuration is excellent for making progress despite headwinds, and turning every challenge into multiple opportunities for productive growth.
August 26-27 shows Moon in Capricorn creating a Grand Earth Trine, again favoring the productive stabilization of whatever we’re attempting at that time. Even though Sun opposes Saturn, with all the other favorable aspects it should lead to a willing acceptance of a whole new sense of challenges. Mars enters Libra on August 27, bringing entirely new energies to our Aries and Scorpio sectors which should be less fussy and precise and more diplomatic and agreeable.
The end of the month brings Uranus going stationary retrograde, marking a “sea change” in our Taurus area of life. The Full Moon on August 30 will play out over the first two weeks of September, and as the Moon is conjunct Saturn and quintile Jupiter and Uranus, it should be quite a unique time filled with endings, gifts, and blessings. The month ends with Mars quincunx Saturn, showing something’s got to give in our early Libra or early Pisces sectors.
Evolutionary Development
This is the first month of the North Node in Aries era! We’re now opening to many months of our line of greatest development being self-initiated activity which acts in the NOW, demonstrated by our balanced response to paying dues and remembering we are as surrounded by life and love as a fish by water. We build through Aries and release through Libra, so adopt a pioneering attitude expressed with grace and diplomacy.
The first half of the month shows growth in finding our place in “the Cosmic Choir” and the need to face facts as we accept a new identity. The second half of the month we grow through using our imagination to “reclaim a lost opportunity,” demonstrated by our ability to fly above the strife of the dualities of life. In any case, we grow through Aries and demonstrate it through Libra’s balance, fairness, and a sense of justice.
As I noted at the beginning, Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aries in late May 2022 began a 2 year adventure in opening to new ways of enjoying life and new freedom to be as authentic as we need to be. That cycle and other Aries cycles are already in motion, bursting into a bright flame thanks to the inner planet conjunctions with Jupiter and Chiron.
Our wise friend Saturn brought us to the threshold of radical transfiguration and entry into a greater field of conscious Light/Life in March, and now we’re in the deep waters of Pisces. This is a time of demonstrating a greater empathy, sense of connection, intuition, and compassion. Specific Saturn themes for August involve feeling a new dedication, joining with others to master discouragement, and navigating “traffic jams” to learn new ways of maneuvering in human relations.
The Sun in Leo is a time to see the Light of new “radiations of heart energy” and releases of our creativity, spontaneity, and playfulness. Take a look at your life and find ways to play! This is the “burst of energy” which will be shaped into “significant form” in Virgo, so we’re already getting a dress rehearsal for the Light we’ll experience in September. Venus retrograde will give us a look back at old likes, loves, and values, so expect returns in the Leo area of your chart.
We now continue our third year of the new Aquarian era, having renewed that energy via inner planet transits for this year. With Jupiter in Taurus, it is finding new “expansive ground” which will sustain the process into the future. Move into the future, stabilize what you can, and make the most of the creative potential of this month.
The new 2023 Aquarian energies powered up the last six months, with rapid developments in March when Saturn entered Pisces and Pluto made its first appearance in Aquarius. As Jupiter is securing a lot at this time, embrace the future and don’t clutch as some things accelerate while we begin our review of Saturn’s lessons this year. This month continues our 2023 surfacing of the Aquarian vision, with a very dynamic Summer of Venus in Leo!
As we’re now in the third year of a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned. Have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future. This month brings new information and perspectives of the new life we’ve embraced since March, so lighten up, play a little, and be willing to explore new arenas of effective activity where you can work and play with other Light Spirits, and take heart as we stand at the dawning of the coming Pluto in Aquarius era.
We have now collectively transfigured into a greater vision of the one Light/Life we all are together. Continue to find your heart strength and new forms of genuine happiness appropriate for who you are now, and who you are becoming relative to just a few months ago.
The 2022 Capricorn and Aquarius transits began a new chapter of utilizing forms of personal power in Capricorn to serve the emerging Aquarian ideal. A huge part of the past died in 2021 and 2022 and a new expansive inspired energy came in via the Mars conjunction with Jupiter in Aries. The past is over and we all have begun our trek into a new world of new potential, new adventures, and new ways to enjoy being ourselves while doing our work of Destiny. Open to the abundance of the process of growth, since we are all on a rocket ship to the stars!
