Beltane: A Celebration of Fire, Faery, and Fertility
April 30 - May 1
“This May eve as I burn, year wheel take another turn.
Fire flame and fire bright, bless us on this May eve night.”
Beltane Blessings to all!
Introduction to Beltane
Beltane, celebrated from April 30 to May 1, is an ancient Celtic festival marking the peak of spring and the arrival of summer. Its name, derived from the Irish Gaelic Bealtaine or Scottish Gaelic Bealtuinn, means “Bel-fire,” honoring Bel (or Belinus), the Celtic god of light. This vibrant festival celebrates fire, fertility, and connections with faery folk, embodying life, abundance, and the earth’s renewal. Learn more about Beltane’s history at CrystalWind.ca.
The Fires of Beltane
Central to Beltane are sacred bonfires, traditionally built from nine sacred woods: Alder, Ash, Birch, Hawthorn, Hazel, Holly, Oak, Rowan, and Willow. On Beltane eve, Celts lit two large fires to purify and protect their communities for the coming year, symbolizing the return of life and fertility to the earth.
Customs included leaping over the flames for luck—young people jumped to attract a spouse, while travelers sought safe journeys. These fires were a focal point for communal celebrations, filled with dancing, singing, and rituals honoring the season’s vitality.
Maypole Dancing and Morris Bells
Beltane is known for joyous traditions like Maypole dancing, a symbol of fertility and unity. Dancers weave colorful ribbons around a pole in vibrant springtime patterns, creating a stunning visual display. Explore Beltane’s Maypole traditions at CrystalWind.ca.
Another charming custom involves Morris bells, worn by English folk dancers during Maypole celebrations. These bells, tied around the ankles with ribbons, jingle to greet May Day spirits and attract benevolent faeries. To make your own, cut ribbons to fit your ankles, thread three bells onto each, and tie with a bow. Dance to welcome faeries to your home or garden!
Crafting a Maypole Candle
If you can’t attend a Maypole event, create a Maypole candle to bring the tradition home:
Materials:
- Tall white, yellow, or green pillar candle
- Pastel-colored ribbons (18 inches each)
- Gold craft bells
- Candle holder
Instructions:
- Tie a gold bell to the end of each ribbon (use a toothpick to assist).
- Starting three-quarters down the candle, tie ribbons with three knots (no bows) and work upward, leaving the top quarter bare.
- Place the candle in a holder raised 6–8 inches to let ribbons drape.
- Swirl ribbons to face east, ready to greet the dawn.
- Light the candle and celebrate May Day blessings!

Faery Magic and Offerings
Beltane is an ideal time to connect with faery folk. Leave offerings like flowers, sweets, sweet May wine, or honey milk in your home or garden to invite their blessings of gentle abundance. Create fairy-friendly garden spaces with birdbaths, tiny rock caves, or stone tables and chairs. An unkempt corner with a statue or a ring of nine stones resembling a mini Stonehenge adds a magical touch.
Try this Faery Chant to welcome them:

Beltane Decor and Rituals
Decorate your altar and home with fruits, flowers, and ribbon-adorned baskets filled with citrus and spring blooms. Scatter flowers on your welcome mat or use citrus potpourri to guide faeries to your door. Craft wreaths from wildflowers and oak leaves to wear during celebrations.
Use these Herbs of Beltane: Agrimony, St. John’s Wort, Frankincense, Hawthorn, Ivy, Marigold, Meadowsweet, Orchid Root, Rose, Rowan, Woodruff, Elder Flowers, Primroses, Rose Petals.
Incorporate these Beltane candle colors for rituals:
- Light Blue: Tranquility and health
- Red: The Lord, sacred bale fires
- Pale Yellow: Spring flowers, Ostara
- Light Green: The Lady, earth’s growth
- Lavender: Faery magic and incantations
