5 Ways to Always Be Growing in Your Career
- Details
- Written by Sophia Smith
We have all faced a wide array of challenges in the past year (and more), which has allowed us unique insights into our core selves, but this period has also pushed us beyond our limitations in personal and professional lives. Many have had to find new ways to rebuild their financial stability, many have turned to creativity and entrepreneurship, while many have found a new purpose in life through their careers.
Professional growth is inextricably linked to personal growth, and as we go through life attempting to reach certain goals, we continuously need to step outside our comfort zone in order to grow. It is through challenge in our calling that we can experience profound generosity, open-mindedness, but also become mindful of our own shortcomings.
Growing doesn’t mean simply eliminating setbacks. It’s connected to your ability to recognize growth opportunities in the most mundane moments, but also in your greatest spiritual challenges. Growth means being graceful through failure, learning from it, and becoming wiser every single day. This time, we will cover a few of the most abundant and effective ways you can build a growth-oriented mindset and allow your career to flourish.
Practice mindfulness every day
Do you know what your purpose is in that professional sense? What has driven you to your current calling? If you just go from one task to another mindlessly, you risk losing track of your goals. It’s impossible to grow when you’re not self-aware, mindful of your purpose, or how your career fits into your life’s larger goals.
When it’s time to focus on your tasks for the day, ask yourself: how does this contribute to my professional purpose? What can I do to be more productive and efficient? That way, you will notice some of those less productive work patterns in your day, bottlenecks in your collaborations, and then resolve them to enable growth.
Learn from your peers
Being a business leader or an entrepreneur is a worthy title to hold in any industry, no matter how small or large your business might be. Even if you’re “merely” an employee playing a minor role in a large team, your journey is one without a destination. For business leaders as well as workers at any level, learning is the key to professional advancement.
A simple way to harness the infinite knowledge at our fingertips is to use learning platforms, digital classrooms, and mastermind groups consisting of industry leaders who have invaluable skills they can teach us.
Sometimes, the certification that comes with these learning experiences can become vital in determining your climb up the proverbial ladder, but it can also help you learn how to value yourself more than ever. Growth demands learning, and the more you recognize what your industry peers and leaders have to offer, the easier it will be for you to advance.
Leverage modern technology
Much like with the learning apps and platforms at your disposal, ready to take your growth goals to the next level, other tech formats have become an integral part of every professional’s journey. From project management tools, to communication platforms, you and your business can only grow as far as you’re willing to master new tech tools taking over the professional realm.
Now that remote work is becoming essential and global collaboration the norm, you need to know how to use video conferencing to your advantage. Communicating with international clients, presenting your business to the world, and joining virtual seminars all demand a video conferencing solution with the right features for all these tasks.
Growth in this digitally driven world calls for professionals who can use such innovative solutions and those who can maximize their potential with the help of tech. Make sure you are truly making the most of technology and communication tools to win over clients, investors, but also to seamlessly work with the best people in your industry.
Abandon the comfort zone
Do you fear public speaking, presenting your business ideas, or talking to investors? Do you want to expand your business to a new market, but you have zero understanding of the target culture and audience?
Fear is a natural part of the human experience, but it’s also essential to face our fears in order to outgrow them, and that includes your professional life. Start deliberately looking for uncharted territory in your business world. Whatever makes you feel uncomfortable – do it.
Letting go of our innermost restrictions helps us grow both professionally and as human beings. This prepares and trains you for stressful situations and makes you more open to challenges in the future, and challenges are the lifeblood of growth.
Stop comparing yourself to others
No matter how much the world would like you to believe it, growth has nothing to do with comparing yourself to others or striving to be “better than” anyone in your professional sphere.
These are arbitrary qualities we’ve decided to somehow quantify only to make ourselves feel bigger and better than those around us. Once you start measuring your success and growth in its own merit, you will be able to understand the true purpose of growth as a notion.
Whether you have the latest smartphone, the best and most expensive office in town, or you’ve managed to outperform a competitor, it’s all immaterial in the grand scheme of things. When you stop playing the comparison game, you start recognizing learning opportunities everywhere around you and you start appreciating everything you accomplish daily.
Finding more mindful, purposeful ways to grow as a professional will help you pursue your personal goals, as well. By focusing on your career, you will be able to live in accordance with your purpose and build a legacy you will be proud of. Growth has no deadline – it’s a never-ending pursuit that will help you appreciate all the aspects of your life on new levels and give new meaning to your existence every single day.
