Self-Awareness: Understand Biases & Perceptions

Self-Awareness: Understand Biases & Perceptions

Question Your Beliefs And Assumptions

Hello friends,

Today I'd like to discuss the importance of knowing yourself more deeply, why it's important, and how to do it.

Background

To follow up what I discussed last week about caring for the Earth and each other, it's important to factor in your biases and perceptions. We all have them, either learned from our upbringing, society, or the media. To know ourselves, we must regularly question our beliefs and assumptions.

Our belief systems are foundational to the choices we make and how we respond to other people and life happenstance. Especially problematical are fear-based beliefs that can be challenging to identify and shift. Examples: beliefs involving race, nonhuman forms of life, social status, poverty, certain genders, politicians and others in power.

Ideally, we examine our beliefs regularly - developing self-awareness of what we are thinking as we respond to life. This must be ongoing. We develop flexible and malleable belief systems that we update when we receive new information or discover that our habitual reaction to a certain type of person or situation is inappropriate.

Your Toolbox Of Discovery

Here are some essential tools for knowing yourself and understanding your biases and perceptions.

FIRST: Still your mind and go within, inviting understanding of beliefs and biases you hold - where/who they came from - and examples of how they play out in your life. Put your ego in the backseat. Be real with yourself, letting go of any self-judgment that may arise. Ask your Higher Self to help you understand how your beliefs and biases prevent you from seeing others through the eyes of compassion and caring - and how doing so reduces your ability to help create a compassionate and caring world.

SECOND: Make a commitment to yourself to be more present to your thoughts and perceptions - in the moment they arise. Example: when you walk down the street and see a homeless person or someone from a different race, what thoughts do you have and what emotions (e.g. fear or anxiety) arise? Go deeper: Ask your Higher Self to help you understand the root(s) of your thoughts and emotions. Only by knowing yourself in this way can you begin transforming your biases and free yourself from their hold on you. The more that you do this, the more peaceful you will be. Your inner peace then transmits into the world - and will come back to you.

THIRD: Experiment when you are involved with loved ones, friends, or colleagues at work. Consider this your feedback system, helping you see your biases and perceptions more clearly. Example: imagine you have had an issue or disagreement with one of these people. Picture him or her and the thoughts and emotions you have. Get real - are these thoughts triggered regularly when you think about or connect with this person? Go deeper: Ask your Higher Self to help you understand the root(s) of the thoughts and emotions. Investigate whether the roots are based on something in current time that happened, or on another situation that either occurred or you fear might happen.

Wishing you love and blessings,

Selacia
