Here’s How Music Can Heal Your Mind, Body, And Heart

Here’s How Music Can Heal Your Mind, Body, And Heart

Most people listen to music while engaging in another activity as it can enhance their overall experience. In fact, different studies have shown that listening to music can boost workout performance while exercising, enhance focus while studying, and it may even help you unwind so you can get better sleep. But did you know that music can also heal your mind and body? There has been evidence that not only can listening to music relieve physical pain, but it may also help to soothe the mind and alleviate emotional pain. Find out how music can help you heal your heart, body, and mind, and why it’s one of the most effective and holistic ways to care for your wellbeing.

It can ease stress and depression

Stress has become a way of life among many adults, and 57 percent of Canadians say that they feel stressed at least once a week. If one doesn’t find a way to cope with stress in a healthy way, it can lead to more serious health problems such as depression and anxiety. This is why listening to music can be beneficial, especially during challenging times. Listening to soothing music, particularly tunes with a lower tempo, can quiet the mind and relax tense muscles, leading to lower stress levels in individuals.

Meanwhile, playing musical instruments can also help to relieve tension. Playing the guitar or piano has been known to be quite soothing for those with frazzled nerves, but drumming can also have a positive effect on your mood. Playing different percussion instruments, such as an acoustic drum set, or ethnic percussion instruments like the cajon or bongos can produce feelings of relaxation, lower blood pressure, and even improve cognitive brain development. All of this can help to ward off certain mental health problems in the future.

It can repair your heart in more ways than you can imagine

There’s a reason why people crank up the sad tunes when dealing with a breakup as crying while listening to sad music can be the first step towards mending a broken heart. Music therapists say that listening to music that matches your mood can help you feel understood and “seen,” allowing you to move on from your heartbreak. But there has also been evidence that music can literally help to repair your heart. According to a study, heart patients who listened to music for 30 minutes had slower heart rates, lower blood pressure, and were less stressed than those who didn’t listen to music. Moreover, another study revealed that patients who listened to music after undergoing heart surgery were less anxious and had less pain than those who rested quietly after the procedure.

It can reduce body pain

If you’re experiencing body pain, don’t reach for the pain reliever. Instead, try listening to music. Music therapy can decrease pain perception and can give you a better control over your pain. It may also help to relieve discomfort during physical therapy or while undergoing uncomfortable medical tests such as a colonoscopy, a mammogram, or an MRI.

If you’re feeling stressed, sad, anxious, or if you need relief from physical pain, try listening to different genres of music to see what works best for you. You’ll find that music can be a holistic way to cope with pain and difficulties, helping you to live a healthier and happier life.
