9 Easy Steps to Create a Cozy Space for Better Meditation at Home

9 Easy Steps to Create a Cozy Space for Better Meditation at Home

Meditation is a must-have 21st-century skill. On most of our days, we run on stress.

Stress is a bad habit we all need to break. Mediation is a tool which relieves stress, soothes our emotions, relaxes us and helps us ground our emotions. A short meditation session is needed to decrease negative feelings and emotions, improve tolerance and patience and give us a different perspective.

You’ll need time and practice and a space to practice to achieve this. People skilled at meditation can achieve this emotional equilibrium even during pubic transportation. However, meditating in a cosy, intimate space achieves the best results. What can be more intimate and personal than a meditation space at home? Here’s how you can create one at home.

It’s all about the right location

The leading quality of a meditation space has to be peace and quiet. Start by evaluating your space to see which part of your house offers such quality. Is it your backyard? Is it the guest room that’s more often available than taken by guests? It can even be a reading corner within your living room.

Next, consider the elements like the amount of natural light, noise levels, how accessible it is and whether it can be a tranquil environment.

Clear the space

Once you’ve evaluated your home, it’s time to move on to making the space easy to use. This step starts by decluttering the space and making it as simple as possible. Less clutter and more space around you create a sense of serenity and ease.

Physical clutter can facilitate mental stress and create a list of distractions that will temper with your meditation practices. A clear mind is a prerequisite for optimal meditation practice.

Consider the aesthetic

The aesthetics of our environment should stimulate our peace, creativity and wellbeing. If you hate the orange colour, don’t get an orange yoga mat for your meditative practices. It’s about creating the mindful and decor by choosing colours that soothe you. You should also add natural elements like wood, plants and crystals to enrich the mediation area further.

Comfortable seating

You’ll have to sit in a specific position during the meditation to enable proper breathing techniques and ease the tension. You also have to think about setting up a comfortable area where you’ll be able to maintain a good posture.

You can buy a meditation chair, on which you’ll be able to sit and keep your back straight. You can use a yoga mat if you need to lie down on your back or sit in a lotus position. You can choose between a meditation chair, meditation cushion, yoga mats or even your favourite comfortable chair.

Incorporating nature

Greenery and nature have a soothing effect on anyone. But, in meditation practices, this sense of tranquillity can further facilitate relaxation and ease. The easiest way to incorporate nature is to take your meditation practices outside. This is common among those who own a house with a backyard. For example, Australians are big on having their own space outside to throw a barbeque and enjoy meditation in their personal nook. The key here is to create a shade by getting one of pergolas Sydney to ensure sun protection while you get lost in meditation.

Once you have a shaded area in your backyard, you can add plants to further connect with nature. Meditating outside will improve your focus, reduce stress, improve your sleep and get your overall mood and happiness up. So, don’t be afraid to consider having a meditation space outside.

Incorporate stimulating scents

Scents and aromatherapy also aid relaxation and stimulate our brain. If you enjoy certain scents, like citrus blends, lavender, and jasmine, you can add a few drops in a diffuser to get the mood going. You will feel lighter just by taking a few focused and deep breaths.

To enhance the sensory experience, you can also use scented candles or incense. You can even incorporate this into a gratitude ritual and use the moment of lighting the candle or incense to say what you’re grateful for or thankful at the beginning of this meditation. You can also say what you want to achieve with this meditation.

Meditation doesn’t have to be in silence

Some people enjoy the calming sound of their inhales and exhales. Some like to meditate in complete silence, while some embrace the music. Those who enjoy the subtle sounds of nature, soothing chimes or gentle notes use it as a focal point. Soothing music is known to create a tranquil environment that promotes mental stillness.

We cannot relax our bodies because our minds are racing. Thoughts are squirming around our minds, creating certain emotions - restless and unease. Gentle background music can be a focal point for attention, helping anchor the mind and reduce distractions.

Also, our minds can act differently while listening to specific frequencies, like binaural beats or chanting. These sounds can entrain brainwaves, guiding the mind into deep relaxation.

Add a bit of personality

Every space is as unique as we make it. You can easily create a unique mediating space by implementing personal touches. If there’s a symbol that you love, a sentence that inspires you, an affirmation you stand by, immerse it into your cosy meditation space.

It can be in the form of an artwork, figurine or artwork made by you; use it as inspiration and as something of significance for this sacred personal space.

Soft lighting

You'll need specific lighting options since you’ll use this area to relax, meditate, breathe, or read. The light has to be soft and natural to introduce warmth and create a calming atmosphere. It can be a table lamp, a standing lamp or just candles you’ll light for a natural and gentle glow. For a cosy glow, you can put up string lights.

Creating a soothing and personal meditation in your space doesn’t require much. But, if you’re a beginner, you must be consistent and mindful about your meditation practice for the best results. Start by using this space, whether it’s indoor or outdoor, as a no-distraction zone. Use it to reflect on your day, your thoughts, and emotions.
