5 Green Ways to Travel Locally

5 Green Ways to Travel Locally

After the recent global happenings, travelling locally has been the only way for many of us to go on an adventure. For others, domestic travel has always been the number one option, as it’s among the most sustainable forms of travel, while benefiting local communities and small businesses alike. Regardless of your reasons, local travel can be an incredibly interesting and unique experience, as long as you learn how to change your perspective. To that end, here are some green ways to travel locally that will surely make for beautiful memories:

1.      Take a train ride to a local destination

5 Green Ways to Travel Locally

Trains are known for being one of the most eco-friendly modes of transport, and are a wonderful solution for local travel. If you’re lucky enough to live in a place with fast and efficient train service, such as many European countries, this is truly the perfect option.

You can hop on a train and only travel a few stops to a unique local destination, plan a specific trip to a neighbouring city or popular travel spot, or even visit a different country altogether in case you live near the border. Similarly, you could also opt for a relaxing train journey across your own country, unwinding with a good book and some soothing music while marvelling at stunning natural surroundings, as a wonderful form of slow travel.

2.      Go on a road trip around your neighbourhood

Although less sustainable, a car will give you more freedom to create your own schedule and travel at your own pace, allowing you to explore your surroundings in a more unique manner. For instance, you can plan a road trip around your neighbourhood by checking the map for any local destinations you haven’t visited before, or any fun places you’d like to revisit.

If you’re more adventurous, on the other hand, a great aspect of a road trip is that it doesn’t necessarily have to be planned at all. If you wish, you could take spontaneous turns towards interesting signs, ask locals for recommendations, or simply let your intuition guide you towards a unique and memorable journey.

3.      Plan a boating adventure in your area

In places like Australia, where another lockdown is currently in place, local travel has become the only option during this period. But instead of feeling restricted and sad, Australians have found new and creative ways to explore the beauty of their country. For that reason, they often decide on one of the great boat hire options available across Australia.

Whether they wish to explore cities like Sydney and Perth, or even sail to the Whitsundays and Fraser Island, heading out to sea seems like the perfect option for experiencing local travel from a different perspective. As boats are also ideal for intimate events, from birthdays and engagements to fishing and family trips, they are also a brilliant solution for safe and secure travel during these uncertain times.

4.      Go on an exciting camping trip nearby

Camping is one of the best, most popular, and most affordable ways to travel locally. It can also present a wonderful opportunity to explore the beautiful natural surroundings, especially if you live in countries like Canada or the US, which offer a wide array of stunning national parks ideal for relaxing camping trips.

And the best part about camping is the fact that it can be done nearly anywhere. As long as it’s legally permitted, you can camp near a beautiful local river or lake, combine a camping trip in the mountains with an active hiking vacation, or even delve into the woods for a more unique experience, all of which will make for an incredibly calming, refreshing, and rejuvenating holiday.

5.      Consider planning a unique staycation

After all, the most sustainable way to travel is not travelling at all. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to deprive yourself of the joys of travel. You only need to change your perspective, and planning a staycation might be a brilliant solution.

For example, you could visit all the galleries and museums in your area, spend a few nights in a luxurious local hotel with full service, take a hike to any nearby beaches, rivers, or parks, or simply act like a tourist in your own city, visiting landmarks, trying out new restaurants, and going on romantic getaways with your partner. You might be surprised just how many gems can hide right under your nose.

Whether the current global situation has forced you to think locally or you simply want to become a greener tourist, domestic travel can always be a wonderful idea. Simply by looking at your surroundings in a new light, you can experience the joys of travel no matter where you are.
