Mastering Automatic Writing Easily
- Details
- Written by Alue K. Loskotová
Automatic writing is a simple, safe and effective way to connect with your Soul.
It can be practiced by anyone, from beginners who have just begun their spiritual journey to experienced mystics. You don't even have to be a writer or bother with spelling and grammar, because none of that matters with automatic typing. Automatic writing is completely intuitive, so all that matters is your heart and your intention. In this article you will find instructions on how to hone this skill, even if you have zero experience.
Automatic writing, also known as psychography, is a technique of tapping into a deep source of wisdom within you that is beyond conscious awareness. It is a conversation with your soul. This intuitive writing is usually done in a trance, or altered state of consciousness. Psychologists and spiritualists have different views on the origin of automatic writing, with some claiming it originates from the unconscious mind and others claiming it originates from supernatural forces such as spirit guides and angels. Other people believe that automatic writing stems from the subconscious, which is the gateway to the Soul, or the path to the Higher Self. Automatic writing is a great way to receive deep and accurate spiritual guidance.
If you learn this art slowly and steadily, you will see how profoundly it can change your life.
Here are the main benefits of this technique:
- It has a calming and centering effect on the mind and body
- Receiving direct spiritual guidance from your Soul and Higher Self
- More inner clarity and a bird's eye view of the situation
- Improved ability to make wise decisions
- Healing and balancing the third eye chakra and throat chakras
- Increased connection to the heart center
- Your intuitive abilities are refined and further developed
- You feel more supported and accepted by life
- Your ability to trust your primal instincts increases
- You understand what your path and purpose are
Over time on your spiritual journey you will discover that different parts of your personality and your life have undergone some spiritual transformation. The transformation can be triggered by a life experience, an event, a meeting with a person who influences us, or it can be triggered by spiritual training. Automatic writing training can also induce a subtle spiritual transformation. Many people who have undergone a spiritual awakening are often instinctively drawn to it because of its revealing, healing, and self-accepting aspect—qualities that every spiritual seeker needs.
Automatic writing is a spiritual exercise that is as relevant and beneficial as yoga or meditation because it opens the door to experiences of self-realization and spiritual Oneness. Basically, automatic typing is pretty simple.
The step-by-step process includes:
Prepare pen and paper. You can also write in word on the computer, but in intuitive writing it is better to use your hand and let it move freely on the paper, rather than tapping out letters.
Meditate on your question and write it down on paper
Relax your body and mind. Play meditative music, light candles, meditate, or take a relaxing bath beforehand. You need to put your daily worries and fears aside for the time being, because then the gentle voice of your spiritual guidance can speak to you.
Let your writing flow spontaneously.
However, initiating the energy flow needed for automatic writing can be quite difficult without some guidance, unless you have an innate gift for it. You may also find, like many people before you, that the first time you try automatic typing, you get really good at it. Then you go back to it, excited about the previous success, and somehow it starts to rub off on you. This may be because when you first try something new, your mind is ideally free of outcome expectations (called the beginner's mind ) and is therefore more receptive to the process. However, once you start building up the mental baggage of your expectations of how things should go, it tends to block the spontaneous process... Don't worry if this happens. What you will have to learn is to empty and free your mind. Here are some tips on how to do it:
Allow yourself time and space
Before you begin automatic writing, it is important that you give yourself as much time as you need to fully express everything that needs to be expressed. One surefire way to prevent the free flow of information is time pressure and the expectation that it "should take some time."
Automatic writing usually takes a few minutes to half an hour, but sometimes it takes longer. Create a space in which you can relax mentally as much as possible and so that you have at least an hour or more free for this exercise.
Ponder Your Question
The whole purpose of automatic writing is to access guidance from your Soul, especially if you have trouble hearing it in your normal day-to-day life. Start each of your sessions with a clearly stated question and write it down. Pick a question that really genuinely interests you or is really eating you up inside. The more emotionally charged your question is, the clearer the received answer will be.
It is called setting the intention. It is also important that you address your question to someone or something specific, such as your soul, your spirit guide, or your superconscious. For example, your question might be, “Dear soul, why do I keep sabotaging my relationships?” Try to keep your questions simple. If you have many questions, divide them into different sessions and deal with each one separately.
Free Your Mind
Learning how to free your mind is the most important part of automatic writing. When your mind is calm and free of distracting thoughts, writing spontaneously becomes much easier. Examples of possible ways you can relax your mind include:
- Meditation
- Breathing techniques
- Mindfulness
- Visualization
- Aromatherapy
- Sitting in nature
- Yoga
… There is also a plant that helps to amplify spiritual insights. A good book on this topic can be found here.
Do what works for you and what relaxes you the most. Maybe you've tried something else that works well for you.
Put yourself in a gentle trance
The most common trance we enter is while watching television. You don't have to be asleep, or be fundamentally out of it, to be in an altered state of consciousness. For some people, even ordinary prayer can trigger it.
For automatic writing, entering a trance is very useful because it facilitates the spontaneous flow of information (or flow ). Common ways to enter a light trance include listening to music, yogic and holotropic breathing, mantras, repetitive movements, guided meditation, self-hypnosis, and many others. Choose what suits you best and don't be shy to experiment.
Allow information to flow freely
Once you feel ready, you can start writing. Don't worry if the words are slurred at first, the sentences don't connect, or if you have a mess. Think of it as your attunement process.
You may find yourself judging what you write and analyzing it with skepticism. You think what the hell I'm writing, it still doesn't work... That's completely normal. If you find your logical mind getting too involved in the process and starting to sabotage you, go back to the relaxation technique you used earlier to get into a trance or flow state. For example, if you were breathing rhythmically, breathe again until you calm down. You will probably have to repeat this several times.
It helps someone to close their eyes while writing so that I am not so easily drawn into judging what they are writing.
If you're not used to writing something visceral, you'll probably be a little hesitant at first, which is natural. With practice, you will get into "flow", which means that your automatic writing will become easier and easier to do.
Don't judge what you just wrote. No one but you will see it anyway.
Focus on entering the trance, keep your mind free and focused, and just write. Logic will have enough time to dig into it later, for now, leave you alone.
Interpret Information
At some point, you will intuitively feel that your automatic writing is coming to an end. You may feel like you've "dried up" energetically or your mind has re-sharpened. Or you may feel as if you are "running out of gas" and soon "it" will shut down. Over time, you will learn what this signal looks like specifically for you.
Other times you may just stop writing suddenly and no more information will come. Either way, once you're done, it's time to review what you've written. Try to first look for coherent sentences or key words that can emerge from the text. Maybe most of the writing looks like gibberish, but every now and then a readable sentence pops up - focus on it. Sometimes you will also find patterns, pictures and in some situations even words from foreign languages.
Be prepared to do a little self-reflection because what is revealed is often metaphorical or symbolic.
If you're confused about your write-up, wait and think about it. It may be delayed. If you can't figure it out, just move on, or use it as another question for your next auto-write.
How to Tell If You Are Really Contacting Your Soul
The best way to be sure you are receiving guidance from your Soul is by how you feel when you write. Do you feel a sense of inner spaciousness, lightness and other "good vibes"?
Or are you feeling heavy, emotionally broken and mentally confused?
When you enter a state of no-thinking where you are completely present, calm and at peace, then you are with your soul. However, when your attempt to write becomes compulsive and difficult, it usually comes from the mental or emotional energy body – also known as the conscious self, or ego.
Another way to find out if you are really contacting your Soul is to check what is written. Are the words authoritative, clear and wise? Or are the words closer to what your own mind sounds like (incoherent, critical or vague wording)?
Words from your Soul will always sound crystal clear and feel good.
