An Astrological Overview of October 2023

As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.
The Overview for October
In 2023, the month of October shows all the inner planets moving through Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio, with a heavy clustering of Mercury and the Sun with Mars at the end of the month dominating the Lunar Eclipse happening then!
We also have a lot of quincunxes this month, beginning with the final Leo Yod this year made by Venus in late Leo quincunx Neptune and Pluto in the first week of the month.
Speaking of which, October continues to bless us with the closest Neptune sextile with Pluto in 30 years. This year Neptune at “the end of the end” of Pisces is giving us all a sense of vast feelings and finality, and with Pluto at “the end of the end” of Capricorn, it brings a strong sense of the past “coming to present” between now and January, when Pluto returns to Aquarius.
Uranus begins the month at 23 Taurus, giving us a review of past and present rewards confirming something about our worth. It continues to re-trace ground it first awakened in July. The last decan of Taurus brings grounded power, and October brings quincunxes from Libra as well as late October oppositions to Jupiter.
The quincunxes from Mars, the Sun, and Mercury to Uranus during the first three weeks of October challenge us to make balanced adjustment and reasonable sacrifices. See the humor as well as the poignancy in what’s being sacrificed, with the comfort that these are “final dues to be paid” this year related to how Uranus sextile Neptune is working in our charts. As this is an off-set Yod, keep adjusting to circumstances and squeeze out all in your life which would distract you from fulfilling your higher purpose.
All the inner planets are making waxing aspects to Uranus this month which as they oppose Uranus in November and December will be mirrored in the waning aspects made after that. Mercury is now speeding up as it moves out of its shadow zone en route to its Superior conjunction with the Sun at 27 Libra in the third week of October, so Mercury “leads the light” this month until that conjunction, after which Venus will “lead the light.”
The recent Mercury retrograde was important as the next step in the Earth trine retrogrades of 2023. In Virgo we reviewed our standards, and now can express our genius in our unique way. Jupiter is still retrograde, giving us a “look back” at issues related to the Spring Mercury retrograde. The themes of both these retrogrades is teaching us that the entire period of April 2023 through March 2024 is a time when old answers can’t confirm the new conditions, and old approaches won’t get the job done. Find new approaches, new attitudes, new understanding, and don’t worry about the past.
With Uranus in late Taurus, Neptune in late Pisces, and Pluto in late Capricorn, we have a very strong “double sextile/trine” which should favorably impact all planets we have in the last 8 degrees of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. The Spiritual Field represented by these outermost planets are helping stabilize our late Earth and Water sectors, preparing us for an entirely new experience of Spirit and Life in 2025 when these Spiritual powerhouses shift out of Earth and Water into Fire and Air, joined by Saturn when it enters Aries.
October begins with only the outer five planets retrograde, with Pluto going stationary direct early in the month. With so many outer planets retrograde, we’ve been re-tracing a lot of spiritual ground this Summer, so it’s been a time of review, rewind, and taking a new look at the lessons we’ve seen from all of these when they were direct earlier in the year.
With so much Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio, keep adjusting, stay flexible, see multiple points of view, and move into seeing what you no longer need and can eliminate by late October to lighten your load and concentrate your energies. With Venus now direct in motion, we can resume some Venus-ruled areas which got put on hold back in late July. We’ve now reviewed a lot and can move forward with enthusiasm and be more playful! The intense Libra focus the first half of the month coupled with the intense Scorpio focus the last week of the month shows that’s where the action is in our charts.
This month the inner planets are closing in on their November oppositions to Uranus, showing they’re closing in on the outer planet occupied zone which begins with Pluto in late Capricorn. Those will be the final non-lunar oppositions to the outer planets for the year, promising closure, completion, and compression of energies from now through March, when all the planets will be within a very narrow 108 degree span!
When the inner planets transit Capricorn through Taurus and conjunct the outer planets, it’s a time to pull the energies inward, and when they’re between Cancer and Scorpio it creates different dynamics in how the energies express. Because the inner planets are now forming oppositions to Saturn and Jupiter this month, and Neptune, Jupiter and Uranus next month, we are seeing the externalization of those spiritual energies in the houses the inner planets are transiting.
Remember, the first 14 days of the month are still under the influence of the September New Moon at 22 Virgo, giving us a new look at the standards we’ve lived by for 14 years. As that was the degree where Mercury went SRX in August, we had excellent chances to firm up our “venerable standards” and claim elements of our spiritual heritage. We are in a time of being educated spiritually about our service on a social or emotional level, this coming to fruition during the first half of October due to the Full Moon of September 29 at 6 Libra/Aries.
The second half of the month is under the influence of the October 14 New Moon Solar Eclipse at 22 Libra, showing that we will in some way become sensitive to what we can give to others which nourishes them. As that Lunation is an Eclipse, it promises to begin shutting down something in our late Libra sector. Because the second half of Libra is about reconstruction and repair, and the last decan is one of paying dues, it could be that whatever is taken away shows us where we’ve paid our dues and can now move into other more fulfilling Libra activities.
When Jupiter entered Aries in May 2022 we launched into a new era which became a dominant theme when Mars conjuncted Jupiter in late May 2022 at 4 Aries. That conjunction began a 2 year cycle of learning how to enjoy life more naturally on our own terms. When Jupiter revisited that conjunction point in late January it accelerated the growth of that energy, renewing its fiery expression.
Jupiter moving through Taurus gives a Taurus backdrop to planets we have in Sagittarius and Pisces, as well as the houses where we have these signs on the cusp. As it now rules Saturn and makes the specializing quintile all month, open to the quintessence of things, remembering that as we learn to master life’s tests we become stronger for the effort.
Saturn is now retrograde and continues to bring deep and vast feeling energies to planets, points, or house cusps we have in Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn’s retrograde station indicates this Summer and Autumn have been “a call to renewal” wherever we have early Pisces. This is the beginning of a new life which will unfold quickly in early 2024.
Speaking of another long wave Aries energy in our charts, Jupiter launched a major healing and mentoring cycle when it conjuncted Chiron at 15 Aries on March 11. That began a long wave Chiron cycle which will last until the Summer of 2036. As an aside, when Chiron transits between Aquarius and Gemini, it moves relatively slowly and has conjunctions with Jupiter about every 13 years. However, it can take 19-20 years for the next conjunction after Gemini or Cancer. That means once the conjunction at 16 Gemini happens in the Summer of 2036, then we won’t have another conjunction of Jupiter and Chiron until the Spring of 2056 in Aquarius.
Because Jupiter rules Pisces, this month Saturn will have a steady Taurus feel. As Jupiter is heralding where Saturn will transit in a few years, we’re all getting a sense of corners to be turned later this decade when Saturn transits Taurus and makes the waxing square to the December 2020 Jupiter/Saturn conjunction point at 1 Aquarius. That conjunction ended a 200 year Earth era and began a 200 year Air era, and set the sociocultural conditions for the greater Aquarian 20 year era now developing.
Planets Slowing Down, Speeding Up, or Shifting Signs
As mentioned earlier, this month begins with all the inner planets in direct motion and all the planets from Jupiter out to Pluto being retrograde. Mercury and Venus are speeding up quickly bringing us “a new life” as per Venus’ SRX degree and opportunities for us to demonstrate our genius, as per Mercury’s SD degree. Mars continues to accelerate after its direct station at 9 Gemini in mid-January. Jupiter and Uranus are both “crashing into retrograde,” Neptune’s retrograde, with Pluto going direct in early October and Saturn speeding toward its direct station in early November.
In October we have four planets changing signs. This month the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Libra and Scorpio), and Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, will give us three (Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio). Venus, ruler of Taurus and Libra, will give us two (Leo and Virgo) and Mars, ruler of Aries and Scorpio, will give us two (Libra and Scorpio).
It’s important to note that the Sun is in the sign of its “Fall” in Libra, as is Venus in Virgo, the sign opposite its exaltation. It is said a planet in the sign of its “Fall” is expressing in a sign it really doesn’t learn from, because the Sun needs decisiveness (Aries exaltation) and Venus needs empathy and compassion (Pisces exaltation.) Mercury in Virgo is strong, as is Mars in Scorpio, so make the most of the power of those planets as the Light is trying to make up its mind and Venus is trying not to worry too much!
Mars
As noted, Mars continues to pick up speed by the week. It went stationary direct at 9 Gemini in January, with a theme of being a Zen archer, sure in your aim as a result of your training between September 2022 and February 2023. This will be a theme for this year and 2024. Mars is now in Libra and will move into Scorpio the second week of October. In Libra, it helps us express ourselves with grace and elegance in balanced ways. The stylish ways of expressing “the ideal” we have crafted in Libra will achieve focus and magnetic power in Scorpio, Mars’ home sign.
This month Mars activates the house(s) where we have 23 Libra through 14 Scorpio. Mars is in “exile” in Libra, as that sign opposes Mars’ natural Aries quality. Mars in Libra can be too indecisive, but is extremely diplomatic and would rather do a project in a thousand small steps than a few giant ones. Again, this shifts when Mars enters Scorpio, where it is quite comfortable focusing to a laser intensity and eliminating anything which would get in its way.
Mars begins October in sextile with Venus and square to Pluto, indicating the need to face facts as we embrace a new identity, and pay homage to whatever holds things together at our core. We may be called to bring light in someone’s darkness, or remind them that they are as surrounded by life and love as a fish by water. Don’t play to gloomy mental states, and move in new directions which feel better than the old ones.
Mars trine Saturn at the middle of the month is great for stability and planning, turning major corners and realigning with new directions and new allegiances. By the end of the month Venus is septile Mars and Mars is opposed to Jupiter, so expect “forks in the road of destiny” if you have planets or points near 11-15 Scorpio, 2-6 Capricorn, 24-28 Aquarius, 16-20 Aries, 7-11 Gemini, 29 Cancer-3 Leo, and 20-24 Virgo. Late October and November will set forces into motion which are moving your life in entirely new directions!
The first 11 days of October, Mars is in the Gemini decan of Libra, ruled by Mercury with an extra dose of Jupiter. From October 11 through 26, Mars is in the Scorpio decan of Scorpio, ruled by itself with an extra dose of Mars (VERY intense decan!) The last 5 days of the month, Mars is in the Pisces decan of Scorpio, ruled by Jupiter with an extra dose of the Sun.
Between October 1-10, Mars will prove agitating to those with planets between 23-30 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Between October 11-20, it will have the same effect on planets between 1-6 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. And between October 21-30, it will agitate planets between 6-13 of the same Fixed signs.
As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating from a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force. Hard aspects to/from Mars always require that we moderate or antidote impulsiveness and impatience.
Sign Focus
This month the sign focus again shows a preponderance of Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio. Venus is in Virgo by the second week of the month with the Sun, Mercury and Mars in Libra. That immediately shifts as Mars enters Scorpio on October 11, followed by Mercury and the Sun in the last week of the month.
So the first 5 days of the month features one visible planet in Pisces, Taurus, Leo, Virgo, and Libra. The second week of October shows three in Libra and one in Leo shifting to one in Virgo, two in Libra, and one in Scorpio. This holds through October 23, so that at the end of the month we have one visible planet in Virgo and three in Scorpio.
We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set – The Bigger Picture
We’re still in the initial years of a new era in human evolution. The Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.
We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, 20 Gemini, 11 Taurus, and 2 Scorpio, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated, 11 Taurus will help us remove “weeds from our garden of Life and Mind,” and the one at 2 Scorpio is helping us release memories and attachments from the past.
The May 2022 eclipses with Sun in Taurus have begun to shut down old value systems in that sector, as well as the Scorpio sector via the May Full Moon Wesak Festival eclipse. November’s Total Lunar Eclipse Full Moon at 17 Taurus/Scorpio has helped us tap our spiritual power to transform our lower self and our worldly expression. The Scorpio Solar and Lunar eclipses are already leading us to say goodbye to the past, giving up some old ideals, and finding a new perspective on how and when to do things. You can find out more about Solar and Lunar eclipses by going to the archives on how eclipses work.
The April-May 2023 eclipses have begun to work their magic on our Aries and Libra sectors for quite a while to come. The Solar eclipse at 30 Aries is sure to shut down some elements wherever we have that in our charts, and the eclipses later this year will be the last in the Taurus/Scorpio sector with another one coming in our Libra sector.
As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.
Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month
October begins under the influence of the September New Moon at 22 Virgo, the same degree where Mercury went retrograde in August. That indicates we have all had different views of the standards we’ve lived by for the past 14 years, and reformulated some of them in the light of how we’ve been educated emotionally and socially since then. These themes will be brought to fruition beginning at the Full Moon of September 29, which brings two weeks of taking responsibility for getting clear about our ideals and expressing them in direct ways.
The beginning of the month shows Mars quincunx Uranus, bringing hard adjustments requiring balance, a sense of interrelatedness, and a willingness to face the future at the threshold of our “entrance into a new land.” This is immediately followed by Mercury opposed Neptune and trine Pluto, helping us get to the heart of any matter and a sense of how the phase changes of the past give us a roadmap to the future. See what holds everything together, conform as circumstances require, and stabilize your understanding. This will open up powerful rebeginnings and the sprouting of long term seeds of transformation which will kick into high gear beginning May 2024 with a huge acceleration in the Summer.
October 3-4 shows Venus quincunx Neptune, beginning the slightly offset Yod which will complete when Venus quincunxes Pluto on October 6. This is the last of the Leo Yods in 2023, so see what needs eliminating to receive “spiritual blessings after the death of useless things,” and the “spiritual linkage through emotional stress that allows for a new view of a dawning day.
During that first week of October we also see Mercury entering Libra, changing the backdrop to planets we have in Gemini and Virgo. It immediately quincunxes Saturn, showing the need for a balanced response to limits or duties, a wider view of the evolutionary process, an acceptance of an “electrifying experience” should one come our way, and a willingness to play if “the school is closed.” This is gain through inconvenience.
As noted earlier, Mars quincunxes Uranus on September 30/October 1, and then quincunxes Neptune on October 5. This is another Yod with Mars as the focus of the productive spiritual energies shared by Uranus sextile Neptune. This period it’s most important to adjust in fluid ways, be balanced in your responses, and move between heart and mind, love and will, yin and yang as you demonstrate your “Tai Chi consciousness.”
The weekend of October 6-8 is packed and stacked! Besides Venus quincunx Pluto, we have Sun quincunx Jupiter, helping us tap the “power of our spiritual ancestry” as well as find the “camouflage” we need to do our destiny. We also see Mars square Pluto, requiring balance, honesty, willingness, and going to source, and finally Venus entering Virgo after its long stay in Leo. Flexibility is a virtue, as is embracing the new life unveiled since June in a spirit of generosity.
The first week of October shows the Moon transiting between Taurus and Leo, initially putting the focus on Jupiter and Uranus and creating a very favorable Grand Earth Trine on October 1-2. The Moon in Gemini on October 3-5 is generally favorable, though October 5 could get strange with Moon quincunx Pluto followed by Moon entering Cancer and squaring Mercury while Mercury is quincunx Saturn and Mars is quincunx Neptune. The week ends on a volatile note with Moon in Cancer square Mars and opposed Pluto on October 7, bringing the need for “right action” to any planet we have in the late degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.
The second week of October begins with Mars square Pluto and Venus entering Virgo, immediately followed by Venus opposed Saturn. Try to be as flexible as you can be, don’t play to harsh social judgments, and remember that because Pluto goes stationary direct on October 10, things could become VERY volatile quickly at that time! The Sun opposed Chiron should help us grow into our higher Self, and Mars leaving Libra on October 11 should bring more power and focus after we identify our “philosophical completion.”
The best thing about the second week of October is that Mars trine Saturn dominates the entire week, which should bring some degree of “stable fluidity” in our actions as we move into new allegiances and directions. Still, be aware that Mercury is quincunx Jupiter on October 12, giving us insights into the previous week’s Sun quincunx Jupiter.
The Moon transits between Leo and Libra in the second week of October, with crosscurrents on October 9 as the Moon squares Uranus and quincunxes Neptune while Venus opposes Saturn. The 10th is a metaphoric earthquake, with Pluto on its station and the Moon conjunct Venus and opposed Saturn, boosting the opposition energies. October 11-12 provides great relief with Moon in Virgo bringing the Grand Earth Trine back into focus, and with the opposition to Neptune in the mix it forms a “Peace Sign” configuration which is exceptionally stabilizing and productive for all planets in the last degrees of the Earth and Water signs.
The second week of October ends with the Solar Eclipse at 22 Libra forming a quincunx with Uranus but it’s not a Yod since the Lunation is triseptile Neptune, making the last half of October and first half of November a “fork in the road” of our ideals or how we connect within the collective field. Find those who “speak your language” as you stand on the threshold of a new way, and see how you have actually already attained a view which enabled that to happen.
Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month
The second half of the month begins with that New Moon Solar Eclipse which will begin shutting down some things in the house where we have 22 Libra. The third week is another period of an off-set Yod with Mercury quincunx Uranus on October 17 and quincunx Neptune on October 19, with Mercury in Libra the nozzle for the focus of the energies. As the Sun gives us a dress rehearsal October 15-18, use the Light of Mind to sacrifice whatever you need to in order to complete a long wave karmic cycle, as it will lead to some sort of repair or reconstruction within you wherever you have very late Libra.
That “planetary two-step” of the Solar Yod followed and overlapped by Mercury’s Yod puts a tremendous focus in that late Libra area, which is cemented for the next few weeks by the Superior conjunction of Mercury with the Sun on October 19/20 at 27 Libra. That “fusion of Life and Mind” with Mind racing forward shows that between then and when Mercury goes retrograde in mid-December, we should find some measure of “transcendent security” by being able to get above some dualities and sail free into the clear skies, whether of consciousness or Life. It promises us the ability to get above stress through a higher vision and a calm objectivity based in our inner strength.
However, that “fusion of Life and Mind” is also square Pluto! Mercury squares it on October 20, and the Sun on October 21, showing the need to manage things as they really are, being sensitive to what needs caring and what sentimentalities have to go by the board. Have confidence based in your self-discipline, see things in their interior nature, and keep the positive potentials in mind despite the limiting conditions.
The third week of October shows the Moon transiting between Scorpio and Capricorn, bringing a lot of focus and compression in that part of our chart. Moon in Scorpio October 15-17 shows the need for caution at the beginning, balance in the middle, and expansion before contraction on the 17th. The Moon in Sagittarius on the 19th should be very productive, and Moon in Capricorn on October 20-21 should be very enjoyable, even as it puts a punctuation point on things past via Mercury and the Sun square Pluto.
The fourth week begins with Venus trine Jupiter on October 21, showing the period between October 18-23 can’t be all bad! This will harmonize any planets we have in the middle degrees of the Earth and Water signs, so take time to enjoy yourself in the midst of the adjustments, sacrifices, and turning points. This favorable trine is immediately followed by Mercury and the Sun entering Scorpio, with both trine Saturn, favoring stable flow.
That week the Moon transits between Capricorn and Taurus, so it covers a lot of ground and makes some very favorable aspects. Make the most of that week, since it begins with the integrative power of the Fixed T-square of Moon squaring Mars opposed Jupiter on October 22, throwing a lot of power into our Leo sector. The very favorable Moon in Pisces on October 24-25 is followed by the multiple quincunxes of the Moon to planets in early Scorpio on the 26th, so adjust, adjust, and adjust!
The fourth week culminates with the Lunar Eclipse at 6 Taurus/Scorpio on October 28. As that eclipse features Mars opposed Jupiter, with the Sun and Mercury also opposed Jupiter and the Moon conjunct Jupiter, that will be an extremely polarizing Eclipse with “battle lines being drawn” even as the magic of Jupiter quintile Saturn and Venus trine Uranus help to ease things out a little.
That makes the last four days of October very intense, compressed, fixed, dynamic, and somewhat polarized! Quickly eliminate and say goodbye to whatever you need to, since the past is definitely done and a whole new set of cycles is about to manifest via the compression of Sun, Mercury, and Mars. The intensity of October 28-29 will quickly give way to better feelings by the afternoon of October 29. Show flexibility and adapt during the many quincunxes in play October 30-31.
Evolutionary Development
This is the third month of the North Node in Aries era! We’re now opening to many months of our “line of greatest development” being self-initiated activity which acts in the NOW, demonstrated by our balanced response to paying dues and remembering we are as surrounded by life and love as a fish by water. We build through Aries and release through Libra, so adopt a pioneering attitude expressed with grace and diplomacy.
This month we grow through “the redemption of a promise” which awakened July 2016 and took flight beginning April 2023. This month we get to “show what we know” by “seeing through life and death processes” to find the promise of the new once our “mental rebelliousness” wearies of other things. In any case, we grow through Aries and demonstrate it through Libra’s balance, fairness, and a sense of justice.
Our wise friend Saturn brought us to the threshold of radical transfiguration and entry into a greater field of conscious Light/Life in March, and now we’re in the deep waters of Pisces. This is a time of demonstrating a greater empathy, sense of connection, intuition, and compassion. Specific Saturn themes for October involve finding protection as we “lift ourselves to surer foundations” on the way to a rebirth of our way of navigating the “marketplace of life” and find new ways to transact our business on every level, with ourselves as well as others.
The Sun in Libra is a time to see the Light of how to dance with an ideal, having shaped the Leo “radiations of heart energy” into practical useful forms in Virgo. We now know where we want to take the lead, and the service and humility required to do that. Now we can enter a transfiguration process, with Venus in the background helping us bring beauty to our functional expression.
We continue our third year of the new Aquarian era, having renewed that energy via inner planet transits for this year. With Jupiter in Taurus, it is finding new “expansive ground” which will sustain the process into the future. Move into the future, stabilize what you can, and make the most of the creative potential of this month.
The new 2023 Aquarian energies powered up the last six months, with rapid developments in March when Saturn entered Pisces and Pluto made its first appearance in Aquarius. As Jupiter is securing a lot at this time, embrace the future and don’t clutch as some things accelerate while we begin our turn toward renewing our quest, our strength, and our compassion.
As we’re now in the third year of a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned. Have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future. This month brings new information and perspectives of the new life we’ve embraced since March, so lighten up, play a little, and be willing to explore new arenas of effective activity where you can work and play with other Light Spirits, and take heart as we stand at the dawning of the coming Pluto in Aquarius era.
We have now collectively transfigured into a greater vision of the one Light/Life we all are together. Continue to find your heart strength and new forms of genuine happiness appropriate for who you are now, and who you are becoming relative to just a few months ago.
The 2022 Capricorn and Aquarius transits began a new chapter of utilizing forms of personal power in Capricorn to serve the emerging Aquarian ideal. A huge part of the past died in 2021 and 2022 and a new expansive inspired energy came in via the Mars conjunction with Jupiter in Aries. The past is over and we all have begun our trek into a new world of new potential, new adventures, and new ways to enjoy being ourselves while doing our work of Destiny. Open to the abundance of the process of growth, since we are all on a rocket ship to the stars!
