The Challenge Of Admitting A Mistake
Hello friends,
Today, I'd like to discuss the challenge of admitting a mistake or that we did something wrong. This is a universal challenge, yet with increased self-awareness we can understand and remedy this problematic dynamic involving our shadow self.
Background
Each of us has a shadow self involving the unconscious parts of our personality - including our repressed weaknesses, desires, and instincts. The shadow self can involve both positive and negative qualities that we haven't integrated into our conscious self.
An example of a negative quality is to deny that a mistake was made. This can happen in both personal relationships and in the workplace. A colleague at work may deny receiving your email, or create a story to justify time away from the office. The colleague's shadow self decided it looked bad to tell the truth.
We can't dissolve our shadow self, but we can discover how it derails us and learn to cultivate a more open mindset.
5 Ways to Cultivate a More Open Mindset
- Acknowledging a mistake often requires vulnerability, which can trigger defensive responses if the shadow self harbors fears of rejection or inadequacy. This fear can lead people to deny or rationalize their actions instead of owning them. In your spiritual practice, focus on developing vulnerability.
- The shadow self may resort to defense mechanisms - like projection or denial. Do a meditation, inviting your Higher Wisdom to reveal your defense mechanisms.
- Common triggers for the shadow self are identity and self-image. Tune in to your body’s feedback—inviting a knowing of how admitting a mistake feels like a threat to your self-image.
- Shame and guilt about past actions or behaviors is a challenge for many. These feelings could come up when you are asked to do something and you don't do it. In your spiritual practice, invite your higher wisdom to reveal what your shadow self is holding onto so you can let it go.
- Advance your personal and spiritual growth by going deep within yourself to confront and integrate hidden aspects of yourself. Doing this increases your self-awareness and transforms your mindset so you see your faults as opportunities for learning.
