December 27th ~ January 3rd
Let our New Year’s resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. ~ Goran Persson
This year’s Capricorn New Moon falls just before New Year’s Eve, on December 30th, at 5:27 pm Eastern Time (2:27 pm Pacific, 10:27 pm Greenwich Time). New Moons are symbolic of new beginnings. And the New Moon in Capricorn is a time to plant seeds that we wish to see grow and flourish into the New Year. Capricorn is a sign of endurance, commitment, determination and longevity. Therefore what better time might there be to sow the sorts of intentions and resolutions that we wish to last?
As the Old Year is waning, and we approach the New Year, Father Time is gathering with his scythe the wisdom and experience of the previous year, while also clearing the field for the seeds that are yet to be planted. And so this Moon is ripe for our New Year’s Resolutions.
The days leading up to the New Moon on the 30th, is a time of clearing, releasing and purifying. And so we are reminded to clear out the cobwebs and clutter of our lives, in order to make room for better things to come. And then we can sow our resolutions within the New Moon phase, which begins with the New Moon on the 30th and lasts through to the Crescent Moon on January 3rd. Make them positive, straightforward and clear. There is no room for ambiguity when the Moon is in Capricorn.
The New Moon at 9º Capricorn 44’ makes a sesquiquadrate to radical Uranus, still in its retrograde phase. While Uranus is retrograde, we are making internal adjustments for any changes that have already occurred in our lives, as well as any changes that we are ready to make in the year ahead. These may be things that we have been ruminating on for a while. Perhaps only wistfully so. But with sesquiquadrates, issues that we have been putting up with for some time, things that we just assumed we needed to abide with, will begin to feel more intolerable. And even if you had not previously considered making changes, this New Moon presents itself as an opportunity to look for alternatives, recognizing that you don’t always have to keep doing things the way you have in the past.
One characteristic of the planet Uranus is that it can be illuminating. And it has the capacity to open the door for better things to come. Therefore, keep an open mind, and be willing to look for solutions in unexpected places. Even simple changes in perspective, or a willingness to consent to change, can have remarkable consequences. By being open to new possibilities you can discover ideas and possibilities that you were not able to see before!
Perhaps a little more subtle, but terribly persuasive in its own right, is all the turbid weather in the background of our lives. Retrograde Jupiter has been emphasizing the inequities in the world and our own lives… the ways in which we put up with these without question, the demoralization, the unfairness, the corruption we take for granted. At the end of January Saturn will perfect its 3rd semi-square to Pluto, an aspect of trepidation, of fear, as well as an aspect of survival. This is a reminder that in order to create space for new buds to grow, we first have to slough off old patterns, old structures and institutions that are no longer relevant, and are preventing the new seeds from taking root, and any new buds from growing.
But old structures do not bow out gracefully. Especially if they are accustomed to being in charge. They will hold on for dear life, and will destroy anything that they perceive to be standing in the way. It can be like that with governments and powerful leaders. It can be like that with institutions. And it can be like that with habits. However, there comes a time when we outgrow certain ideas about the way things are ‘supposed’ to be. Those old ideas no longer serve us well. Or we find ourselves limited by our old habits and patterns of behavior. That is when it becomes necessary to shake off these old patterns, these old limiting ideas, in order for fresher, more relevant ideas to flourish and grow.
On January 3rd, Mars will oppose Pluto while also sesquiquadrate Saturn, the ruling planet of Capricorn. Mars, retrograde, and moving out of bounds from January through April, is strong, lawless, and uncontained. Mars is a catalyst, and as such can bring to fruition the results of actions and causes created in the past. But watch out for this weather! In its retrograde phase Mars is gathering to it a huge morass of resentment, anger, and frustration, which could be unleashed over the next few weeks. This is treacherous weather, and potentially unstable. But it can also be an impetus for us to understand what it means to be strong, to be empowered, to be a force for progressive change. And be able to carry that knowledge with us into the New Year.
Neptune is conjunct the North Node, Pluto is sextile the North Node and Mars continues to trine the North Node through mid-January. This is extremely compelling and karmic weather, within which we are being swept along as if on a tide. It pulls on us from within, from the very source of our being, and is difficult to ignore. We are all being asked to take our places, and connect with our deepest, most heartfelt intentions. And much of that is already beginning, even now, with this, the New Moon in Capricorn.
The Sabian Symbol for the degree of the New Moon in Capricorn, is of an Albatross feeding from the hand of a Sailor. We normally think of albatrosses as hanging around our neck, the burdens we carry, the nemesis we face. In feeding the albatross, there seems to be an act of surrender and acceptance, to take on our responsibilities and burdens willingly, and to do so with compassion. Through this symbol we are being given the key to navigating this torrid weather: through acceptance of the things that we do not have any control over, through kindness, charity and compassion, we can overcome even the most challenging and daunting of obstacles. And if you were to be the change that you would like to see in the world, what would that look like for you?
On December 29th, the centaur Chiron will station, ending its retrograde phase. Trine Mercury, it aims to invest us with the wisdom accumulated through the ages. Sometimes all we have to do is dig back in our own history to gain wisdom and understanding. May we all invest the New Moon with the intention to be kinder, wiser, more compassionate beings. And so may it be.
If you wish to make intentions or resolutions with the New Moon in Capricorn, do so during the New Moon phase, which happens to coincide with New Year’s Day this year! The New Moon phase begins with the New Moon on Monday, December 30th, at 5:27 pm Eastern Time, 2:27 pm Pacific Time, and 10:27 pm Greenwich Time; and ends with the Crescent Moon in the early hours of Friday, January 3rd. But perhaps the best and most meaningful day might be on New Year’s Eve when Mercury and Chiron perfect their trine.
Some advice for the New Moon intentions or resolutions:
