This year’s first full moon is a release point for the emotions that have been welling within us.

If you’ve been working up to a good cry, or maybe to a carb binge, the time is now.

Upset is not a given, though. You may come through these high seas feeling inspired and free. And that’s probably how you’ll emerge even if the feels do overtake you.

The Moon is in her home sign, Cancer, and all things connected to “home” pervade this event – our physical abode, our families and tribe, our homeland and traditions, issues of caretaking and nurturing (which, of course, includes food).

They are now building and cresting and hitting a point of release. As they mount, they could become intense, impassioned and even toddler-like, with anger, frustration and self-pity tinging the dramas.

And many of them have been building and festering for some time. Retrograde Mars, newly returned to Cancer, is close by the Moon. He’s backtracking through territory he visited from late October through early November, but what he’s triggering could be from any point in time. (After all, family and childhood dramas have deep roots.)

His presence is stirring slights and grievances that some people have been stockpiling and fueling. (Perhaps this includes you?) He’s encouraging fighting – for something or someone you love, or just because.

He’s also making people incredibly touchy. Think of poking a crab that has just shed its shell. As a result, some people will be taking a lot of the dramas extremely personally (even without basis), as well as venting with little visible provocation. Part of the reason is Mars’ prodding, and part is the open door to surprises, from the Moon’s sextile to disruptive quick-change agent Uranus.

Uranus adds to the probability of irritants, but he offers some upsides, too. A sudden jolt could be what’s needed to release stored emotions. It could also throw in unexpected developments that are equal parts liberating and awakening, simultaneously freeing us and forcing a different perspective.

Look for the lightning and you may glimpse something that eases your emotions and helps you sail on through.

Understanding is also possible from the Moon’s trine to Neptune, planet of transcendence and compassion, which could open you to a higher purpose within the dramas. The trine may deliver a pleasant anesthesia (or encourage taking solace in escapism, whether that’s binge-watching or a more tangible consumable). You could have creativity flowing through you that bypasses logical thought. Or a development could come out of nowhere that feels heaven sent.

Of course, that aspect’s unbroken flow is also an open channel for illusion, deceit and cosmic fog. Some of those emotions could involve fantastical or unrealistic thinking. You might discover, through a Uranian thunderbolt, that you’ve been fooling yourself. This combo could, for some people, involve grappling with drug or alcohol problems of a relative or someone in your home.

This Moon has an especially long roll-out, due to the presence of retrograde Mars. After he turns direct in late February, he returns to the degree of this Moon in early April. However the emotional dramas show up for you, know that there’s more to their playing out.
