5 Super Simple Tips: A Cheat Sheet for Surviving the Holidays

The holidays….it’s not always all about stuffing and candy canes. For many people, they can bring up fear, trauma and old “crap.” But, there are ways to make it better.
Here is a simple cheat sheet that can help you stop hating the holidays and start making new memories. Ahh, doesn’t that feel better already?
1. Stay grounded
The more grounded, or connected to the earth’s energies you are, the less shaken you’ll be by your environment. A great way to “ground” is by literally pulling your energy down through your feet.
Place your hands at the sides of your waist. With your thumb in the front and fingers toward the back, slide your hands slowly and firmly down your legs. When you get to your feet, squeeze at the sides of your feet. Doing this on grass, dirt, or sand makes it even more powerful.
Another way to stay grounded and balanced is by using Donna’s Daily Energy Routine – a true hero in my own life.
2. Fly fearlessly
Tapping gently with your fingertips on specific acupuncture points on the face and body can really help release energetic blockages. It’s the basis of many energy therapy techniques, one being Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which I use with great success in my private healing practice.
But, there is a simple shortcut you can do that’s particularly effective for fear:
Find a spot about halfway down the top of your hand, in the groove between the pinky and ring finger. Simply use three or four fingers of your other hand and tap or rub that spot. Use it along with deep breaths when you can’t calm down. You are tapping a specific point on one of your meridians (also known as energy pathways) in the body.
This one is responsible for your “fight or flight pattern,” one most of us go into far too often when we’re stressed.
3. Hook Yourself Up!
This time of the year overwhelms people above and beyond normal! This is my favorite fix for a meltdown!
The “hook up,” a Donna Eden energy medicine technique, keeps the governing and central meridians (the main energy pathways in the body) connected. It helps allow you to experience whatever you’re going through, while still creating a sense of safety and calm.
- Place the middle finger of one hand on the “third eye” (between the eyebrows above the nose).
- Place the middle finger of the other hand in the navel.
- Gently press each finger into the skin and it pull upwards. Hold for a minute to three minutes.
- Often you will experience a deep sigh and/or yawn. This shows your energies have hooked up.
4. Give up the need for control
“Let go or be dragged.” – ZEN PROVERB
Needing to be in control is the biggest joy-killer out there. And, not just during the holidays. It sounds harsh but accepting the fact that you don’t have control over everything, even and especially if you want to, can do wonders. Let’s face it – things will go wrong, not everything will happen your way, and you’ll have to go with the flow (or be dragged). Coming to terms with that helps you immediately start to release your struggle for control.
Are you a control seeker because you worry? This might help.
5. Change your language
I always joke with my clients: “Be careful what you tell yourself, because you’re always listening.” And it’s oh so very true. What are you telling yourself? That the holidays are always horrible? That you have way too much to do? What words are you using that are contributing to your overwhelm? If you wouldn’t use a certain phrase or language with someone else in their time of stress, it’s imperative you don’t use it with yourself either.
Start with ditching these 5 words.
I have attended various professional training programs including EFT Level 1 and 2, Eden Energy Medicine, Emotion Code and more. I currently contribute to several publications and blogs and have presented to groups including the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. In addition, I am also proud to be a legally Ordained Minister of Holistic Healing (non-denominational).
