What Our Skin Can Tell Us about Our Emotional State

Skin is the mirror of what happens in our heads. Every expression we make leaves some kind of mark on our faces. All emotions, the good and the bad, have a certain consequence on the body and thus can affect the skin. While happiness will make your complexion healthier because it promotes the release of endorphins which reduce inflammation, the negative feeling can impair the appearance of your skin. Let's see how emotional states can affect our skin and how to deal with it in the easiest way.
Replace anger with forgiveness
It’s normal to get angry once in a while. However, constantly arguing or being upset with something can make your skin look older. When you get angry, the facial muscles tense, leading to the creation of fine lines over time. However, it can also affect the healing and rejuvenation of the skin which can have serious consequences on wound healing all over your body. In particular, it will take more time for a wound to heal if the person doesn’t manage their anger then when they do.
This happens because of high cortisol levels in the body which obstructs collagen production, an essential protein for healing. It is also an important factor in the anti-aging process by making skin firm and preventing wrinkles. Anger management takes practice and a lot of patience, but it’s the epitome of self-care and improvement of your health.
Chase away sadness
Sadness will not only affect the quality of your life but also make your skin wrinkly. When you are sad, you are constantly furrowing your brows and frowning. These repetitive motions create permanent indents in the skin that contribute to your skin looking older. While some sadness you can chase away easily, others, like depression, will require more work.
Depression is not kind to the skin since it increases the presence of chemicals that can prevent your cells from repairing themselves and affecting sleep. Seeking help, taking anti-depressant medication, and being physically active can help you fight the depression. Once you do, you will quickly notice the bags under your eyes disappear and return of radiance in your complexion.
Conquer your fears
When you feel fear, the brain signals adrenal glands to produce adrenaline — a hormone responsible for fight or flight response. Your heart rate will increase and all the blood will be sent to the muscles so you can react to the threat and run.
During this process, adrenaline directs blood from non-essential organs, like skin and face to other, more needed parts of your body. It also narrows blood vessels so that if your skin gets injured, it will bleed less. This is why you get pale when afraid. However, this can also downsize the nutrients and oxygen to your skin available through the blood. Facing your fear is easier said than done, so try therapy and breathing techniques that will help you stay calm and composed.
Take control of your stress
Stress is bad for you, but it’s also hard to get rid of. The trick is to learn how to control your stress and prevent it from negatively affecting your wellbeing. When your stress levels are high, the body produces cortisol and other hormones that affect the circulation, reducing oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin. This can lead to inflammations and allergies, as well as discontinue moisturizing of the skin making it dry and dull.
The most common skin conditions aggravated or even caused by stress are acne, psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. Consulting professionals, like Green Square Dermatology, is the first step in dealing with these problems and treating them medically. Of course, you also have to learn how to control your stress for this treatment to work. Yoga, meditation, and exercise are excellent ways to lower stress levels in your life and give your skin the complete care it deserves.
Get a grip of your anxiety
Anxiety is often interpreted as stress, but the fact is that it's a reaction to stressful circumstances. As a result, you will be more prone to negative emotions that may affect the good habits in your life. You will lose sleep, eat more junk food, purposefully forget your beauty routine, and even not wear sunscreen.
All these can lead to inflammation and infections, like acne and eczema, but also bring out dark circles under eyes and a sallow complexion. One of the ways to fight anxiety is to do things that will soothe you and make you relax. Have a massage, soak in a bubble bath, or go to a retreat for a weekend. Allow yourself to feel better and elevate your mood so you can improve your sleep, mind, and skin health.
In the end
Emotional states can determine everything in our lives and have a huge impact on our overall health. When you feel something, your face reacts by making expressions and your body produces chemicals that affect your skin. With regular professional care and an appropriate beauty regime you can nurture your skin to some extent, but you can also help by taking control over your mental health and overcoming negative elements in your life.
