Managing Your Diagnosis - 5 Ways to Cope with Your Emotions and Enable Growth

Living in these modern times requires ample knowledge and wisdom, especially since we’re overwhelmed with pollution and this hectic, fast-paced way of life. We continuously face challenges and issues to overcome, and we learn how to use them to grow as human beings, to nourish our soul and mind. Alas, some challenges are greater than others, and if you’ve ever had to face a cancer diagnosis, you know just how spirit-crushing it can be.
It changes how you perceive life, and how you see yourself. It alters your sense of time and gives rise to emotional turmoil based on fear and anticipation. However, getting diagnosed with cancer can, to an extent, be transformed into an opportunity for healing yourself, growing as a person, and learning how to appreciate the small pleasures in life.
Although we can hope never to have to deal with a cancer diagnosis, if we ever do, we can pave the way towards survivorship with several vital management strategies that will simultaneously help you empower your healing and growth.
Don’t shy away from knowledge

It’s in our nature to fear what we don’t understand. That is why the first step in overcoming the many negative emotions connected to this challenge should be learning about your condition and talking to a reputable professional that is handling your treatment. Knowledge truly is power, especially when you use it to fuel your growth, and to overcome the various emotional and spiritual setbacks you’re facing.
Look for other people living with the same condition, or those who have survived a similar diagnosis. Ask your doctor for detailed guidance as to how you can adapt your lifestyle to boost your physical and emotional strength. Finally, use that knowledge to make self-empowering decisions that will help you take control of the situation as much as possible, but also feel gratitude and appreciation for everything that you can enjoy in your life right now.
Find local support and help

Every community has a unique, structured approach to helping its residents thrive, and in this case, survive. For example, there is a well-established Hong Kong cancer fund that helps by providing the local community with free, professional advice and support during their health struggles. You can learn about available cancer treatments, look for psychological support and counseling, and talk to other cancer survivors to understand the process better.
This is vital for larger, densely-populated cities and regions where such a diagnosis can make you feel isolated and alone without the right support and care. So, in addition to talking to your family and friends, feel free to ask for help from your local community and your peers.
Work on what you can – your immune system

Now that your body is fighting an intruder, you need all the help you can get from your own, natural defense mechanisms, also known as your immune system. Since various forms of cancer treatment can be very challenging for your body and mind, you can work on building a stronger immune system with the help of natural remedies and alternative medicine.
Adding vitamin and mineral-packed superfoods into your diet, relying on breathing exercises and restorative yoga sessions, all the way to choosing nutritious ingredients in your meals can help you restore your energy and zeal. Other natural supplements such as CBD can help you manage your pain and anxiety and provide you with the much-needed relief during cancer treatment.
Face your emotions

Ignoring the inner workings of your soul can never bring any good. Take the time to listen to your own emotions, recognize them, and understand their roots. Every person facing a cancer diagnosis and the accompanying treatment has a different path to follow. Many will face fear, anxiety, anger, denial, sadness, despair, while many will find that hope, joy, and gratitude can steal the spotlight of this trying time.
Whatever your own emotional bundle might be – own it. Meditate your way through your diagnosis and acknowledge all the emotional turmoil that comes with it. Share them with those you love and others in a similar situation. You never know where you can pick up a worthy lesson or a piece of advice.
Infuse your life with purpose and meaning

Everyone has their own favorite pastime activity, be it binge-watching a Netflix show or checking their Instagram feed for the latest travel pictures of your favorite blogger. Still, there’s so much more to life than the gadget we’ve become accustomed to using daily. Perhaps there’s an activity that will help you feel purposeful and add more meaning to your time.
You can volunteer to help others fighting cancer feel better, or donate your time to teach the underprivileged in your community. In New York, for instance, you’ll find adult education programs you can join to help others grow and find work. Giving back to your community will remind you that you can leave a legacy of kindness and care no matter the outcome of your treatment.
No one ever chooses any form of suffering as the theme for any stage of their life. However, struggling and setbacks are disguised opportunities for all of us to bring out the finest in ourselves, and to face our fears head-on. Of course, everyone needs help, support, and guidance on such a journey. You can help yourself when facing such a diagnosis by carving out your own mindful, healing practices that focus on your wellbeing and fill your life with substance. Use them to enjoy life as much as possible and to find meaning in the time you spend on this humble planet of ours, one wholesome decision at a time.
