Are We Only Friends
Are we only friends
When we think and see the same
Are we only friends
From the thoughts you give my name
Are we only friends
In times that we agree
Are we only friends
When feeding hunger’s plea
Are we only friends
If joining in your fight
Are we only friends
If judgments can unite
Are we only friends
When liking how you hate
Are we only friends
If I participate
Are we only friends
Along a common ground
Are we only friends
When endorsing what you’ve found
Are we only friends
When agreeing on what’s true
Are we only friends
As long as I’m like you
I give you full permission
To be as you will be
Which doesn’t have to match
The values held in me
Each back and forth exhausting
There’s no debate to win
Just because you think it
Doesn’t match the space I’m in
So please enjoy the soapbox
And gospel that you preach
It’s only in my actions
That shows the word I teach
Even if releasing
My image from your grasp
I’ll soon be caught again
When tension makes you gasp
I’m not on either side
I have no sword or shield
I am not a neighbor
Along your battlefield
So thank you for this moment
To redirect my lens
Toward those who truly love me
And know that we are friends
