Otherhood

Otherhood

Otherhood

Sometimes a wrecking ball
isn’t the best way to bring
down an ailing structure.

A decrepit edifice,
an old paradigm.

Whether a literal
thing, place
or person
For it creates a
kind and quantity
of rubble that takes
time and treasure—
perhaps sweat,
tears and blood,
to clean up.

Rather, it seems
wise to allow forces
of higher purpose to
dismantle what needs
dismantling, enabling a
natural series of events
to play out their roles
whether as agents of
disintegration, or
of compost.

Sometimes it takes
a kind of neutron ball
to raze what no longer
supports habitation
and its many
life forms.

Energy summoned
to hold highest good
to manifest amidst
energies being
summoned for
other means.
And ends.

There is a kind of fever
attendant in the waiting,
the wanting of the
essential, the
inexorable
clearing
to occur.

I’m reminded of a scene
in a film* wherein a bunch
of unruly children were only
becalmed, silenced, by
a video of a house
being demolished.

Yes. There is that.

But there is also a choice
enfolded in the time it takes
to allow a thing that is ripe,
overripe, to fall from a tree.

To be made into
something nourishing,
like lunch, cider,
a pot of jam.

That perennial choice
between allowing
and controlling.

Sometimes it is a
fuzzy distinction,
even a difficult
choice.

Other times,
it couldn’t be
more clear.

Our great mother
teaches us the
benevolence
of cycles on
this land.

Should we resist
their rounding ways,
ever in flux/flow, we will
continue to trap ourselves
in circles, chasing our
tails and blaming
them for their
goading.

It is, of course,
unnecessary,
for all is well
in hand.

If we trust
that it is so.

Letting our revolutions
be a peaceable ride
round our magnificent
sun, all of us, or spun
round something
which shoots
and isn’t
a star.

We are joined in
this moment to want
something more, better,
brighter, than has been
before. It is the glue
that binds us to
each other.

To all that is
and can be.

It is the realization
that life is urging
us to make real:

brotherhood,
sisterhood,
otherhood.

We are family.
Earthkind. Let us
remember that it is
our opportunity, in this
life, to turn what we’ve
long experienced as
dysfunction into
a functioning
state of
union.

Right
where
we live.
