Leap

Leap

Leap

No leap, this last day
of this briefest month
of life on earth that
tucks within its soft
pelt the arrival of next
— at least not in the
calendar sense —
just crystals falling
from the heavens
to earth, pure as
this driven snow.

It is the groundhog
long asleep under
the brilliant white who
initiates the month and
the end of winter
by seeing his
shadow —
or not.

A sacred day
in so many ways,
this two of two, I found
myself watching for
the second time in
as many decades,
Groundhog Day.
The film.

Thanks to an impromptu
interaction on that day of
my annual rebirth at the farm-
to-market where I buy our week’s
worth of food, I was introduced
to a ‘birthday twin’ who said
it was her tradition to
watch the film
on her day.

Of an age wherein Bill Murray
is a favorite actor-out of such an
array of human foibles and folly,
I realized I’d resisted this film
of his over the years.

Not that I was aware
of this resistance.

Curious, I, too,
watched.

And saw.

Ascension.

The human journey of
ascending is the journey
this character takes on this
single day that repeats, each
a lifetime, each an opportunity
to meet a higher moment with
every person, circumstance,
interaction he finds within
the seemingly same loop
of day unfolding at the
prompt of a black
and white alarm
intoning:

"I Got You Babe."

[Sonny and Cher’s
paean to a love that
served theirs, our
world, for a time.]

Wow. I hadn’t seen
this the first time
I saw this film.

But I had
different eyes
then, I see.

For the journey
was one of surrender;
one of dismantling all
the layers one life
lives within each
day of one’s life.

Hides under,
like our friend
the groundhog.

Hibernating
the winter
away rather
than meeting
it, living it.

Its choice.
Like ours.

Once all that was
in the way of this
one man’s life
being lived
was removed,
by sheer repetition
of… how does
Becket put it?

“Ever tried.
Ever failed.
No matter.
Try again.
Fail again.
Fail better.

… air.

Yes.
It is the conceit
of the film, the crux
of what we, each/all
are presently
bringing
into being,
methinks.

Ever tried.
Ever failed.

From Old French
faillir (verb), faille (noun),
whose base is the Latin
fallere ‘deceive.’

Whoa.

Lifting the layers
of that which has
deceptively lured
us away from our
power to be.

Open.

True.

Willing

to love and
be loved —no
easy task.

What’s behind
the deception?
Fear.

Of course.

Fear
of being
seen, found
unworthy.

Fear of
our own
indelible
shadow.

So we put
lots of layers
on to keep out
the cold, the
winter. The
death that
each day
brings
only to
birth
new
days.

The change
inherent in
everyday
life, written
in every atom
of our being.

Learning,
day by day
to let go

Once we do,
we find what
we were looking
for all along.

Love.

Connection.

Interdependency.

We move from
deep isolation
within ourselves
to attachment
with all that is.

Ascending
fear as our
driver to
love as
our
warm
place to
dwell.

To leap.

The bridge
in "I Got You Babe":

I got you to hold my hand
I got you to understand
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won’t let go
i got you to love me so
