Costume Party

Costume Party

There’s a grizzly lurking in the corner.
Sipping a dirty martini.

There’s a sheikh adorned in golden paint head to toe.
Over by the potted ferns.

There’s a Richard Nixon, a Donald Trump,
Abe Lincoln and Howard Zinn hunkered down
with Sitting Bull and Gertrude Stein.

Attila and Gandhi
discuss the
weather.

John Lennon's on the balcony
eavesdropping with a giraffe
smoking a joint.

Peacocks pass sweet and sour
hors d’oeuvres.

Marco Polo is in search
of the loo.

Jesus and Magdalene tango
while Picasso and Frida Kahlo
step into a waltz
whose 1-2-3s
are 2-5-7s.

Captain Kangaroo discusses quantum theory
with Einstein, Walt Disney, Nelson Mandela
and Dancing Bear.

Darwin offers his two cents
from a nearby table.

Martin Luther King and Martin Luther
sit ringside quietly musing
on it all.

Dracula, a little better for the wine,
regales a small group of mermaids
with magic tricks.

Sigmund Freud, Jacques Cousteau and
Rosa Parks sip pina coladas on an
eclipsed moonlit veranda, solving
the problems of the worlds.

Darth Vader looks a bit at sea.

Muhammad Ali, Mo, Larry and Curly
listen attentively as Quan Yin
plucks the banjo.

Marco Polo is still searching
for the loo.

Dragons take up the musicians’ instruments
and start a rousing
singalong.

Beethoven rises to conduct
as the astronauts play
air guitars.

The room sways
to strains of
"Free Bird."

Tom Brady throws a hail Mary
to Huck Finn and Henry VIII
concedes hopscotch to
Emma Goldman
gracefully.

A hippo breaks into a laugh
so infectious, the whole place
cracks up except for the hyenas
playing poker in the back.

Cesar Chavez calls for
wine, wine! as Plato
fidgets with the
candelabra.

Bonny and Clyde saunter
round the room putting
jellybeans in people’s
pockets who remain
wholly unawares.

This tickles them pink.

Merlin keeps changing
his costume.

Sinatra pops champagne corks
while Hieronymus Bosch tells
dad jokes about the pope,
personal life insurance
and Armageddon.

Genghis Khan and Pol Pot
appear at the head of the stair;
the devil strides in with the Dalai Lama
and Desmond Tutu flanking—
hilarity perfuming their wake.

The room hushes.

Albert Schweitzer and Joan of Arc
step forward with hugs and
warm welcome.

King Arthur leaps up
and follows suit.

Merriment resumes.

The air is clear, the night still;
Bono and Babar arrive
in a hot air balloon.

There is a palpable serenity
among the party goers.

A convivial flood of
fellowship and
found poetry.

A light that feels like the end
of a rainbow sung by
a girl in Kansas.

So many colors.
Just one tree.

All have accepted the blind invitation
with the proviso that masks
be lifted at the stroke
of midnight.

It is three seconds
from striking.

Time, of course,
being relative.

“Behind the cotton wool is
hidden a pattern… the whole
world is a work of art… there is
no Shakespeare… no Beethoven…
no “God”*; we are the words; we are
the music; we are the thing itself.”
—Virginia Woolf, as quoted by
Maria Popova, themarginalian.org
