3 Zen Principles That Will Make You a Happier Person

You probably already know that you have to strive to live your life to its fullest every day, but you might not know just how to do it. You could be wiped off the face of the planet tomorrow and the universe would not blink, so why not make the most of your time here?
Zen Buddhists are quite the inspirational beings, especially when it comes to seizing the day.
Here are three Zen principles that will help you to start living happier and more fully:
Mushin – Mind Without Mind
The term ‘Mushin’ refers to a mind that is not fixated on emotions or judgments. And while you might be thinking, “Pfft, I never judge others and my emotions are always in check,” is it the truth? Judgment is a natural part of being human, it’s pure instinct to jump to conclusions quickly.
Practice Mushin by keeping your mind open–allow all bits and pieces of information to come to light before settling on a conclusion.
Zanshin – Living presently, and with awareness
Zanshin is a state of being, one where you find yourself living in the moment and entirely aware of your surroundings. Being mindful is important. Acting with purpose increases productivity, emotional intelligence and overall happiness.
So, pay attention, and enjoy each and every little thing that brings you a bit of happiness in life. It’s as easy as acknowledging the grass between your toes when you’re out in a field, or the rush of the water on your hands as you do the dishes.
Satori – Being in a natural state
Satori is a term used to describe total harmony between our mind and body. And many people liken this state to that of when we were children–curious, excited, and entirely open. This isn’t a state that we strive to achieve further down the road, this is a state of being that we should be practicing every day. But it can be difficult to get into because of how distracted we’ve become.
Meditation is one of the best ways we can find this way of being. And it’s been scientifically proven to boost dopamine and serotonin levels (‘feel good’ chemicals), while simultaneously decreasing cortisol levels (the stress hormone).
Practice each of these three Zen principles every day and you’ll start to notice a shift in your overall being. Happier, more alive, vibrant, intelligent, and aware.. You’ll wonder why you haven’t started living this way sooner.
