How to Advance Your Zen Bathroom to Reach Peace and Mindfulness
- Details

The outside world is getting more hectic by the minute and we simply need a safe space where we can go to escape it all. Seeing as how the bathroom is often considered to be a sacred place where we have a few minutes for ourselves in the morning and evening, why not take it to the next level and create a Zen bathroom that will allow us to reach peace and mindfulness? If you are considering a similar project, keep on reading for some inspiration.
Get rid of clutter
You are probably aware that every home improvement project starts with decluttering and this one is no different. This step is especially important if you have a small bathroom seeing as how a lot of knickknacks and random items you have no use for actually make space seem even smaller. For starters, go through all the storage you have and see what stuff you don’t need.
You surely have items you have forgotten about that are just taking up space. This includes old, raggedy towels and products that are well past their expiration date. Make sure you only keep those essential elements and accessories. Everything that has expired or is too worn out needs to be tossed while the pieces that don’t fit the aesthetic you have in mind can be sold or donated. Not only will cutting out the clutter help this endeavour but it will also make you feel much happier.
Repaint the space
Once you have decluttered, you can move on to repainting the space. For instance, if this small space is full of dark colours and elements, you should look for a change. You want to feel safe, inspired and connected to nature, so opt for an earthy palette.
Instead of the typical white that is too sterile for some people, you can paint the walls in sand, grey and taupe shades, in addition to some blue and green hues. These neutral colours will instil peace and relaxation while also allowing you to introduce some bright accessories, such as ruby red towels or rugs.
When it comes to vanities and storage as well as the flooring, you’d want to go for something with a light wood accent and natural finish. Even if your bathroom is already painted in light and natural tones, a fresh coat will simply make space seem cleaner and more relaxing.
Consider the lighting
The colours being light is often not enough to create an airy atmosphere. You also have to make sure space is properly illuminated. For one, natural light has many health benefits, such as improving sleep and keeping mood changes at bay, that you will surely want to make the most of.
On the other hand, if you live in a busy town, floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to look out into the surrounding nature while taking a relaxing bath are simply not practical. In that case, you need to look for light bulbs that mimic natural light. Finally, you should consider getting a dimmer switch so that you can dim the lights when you want a more romantic, tranquil vibe.
Add cozy elements
In order to be able to properly relax in your bathroom, you need fixtures that suit these needs. Therefore, if you have the funds for a proper renovation and enough space at your disposal, you can consider installing new elements. For instance, a round freestanding bath will add a spa-like feeling to your bathroom and you can use it to catch up with the book you are currently reading or simply enjoy a glass of wine while unwinding.
Alternatively, if you can only fit a shower, look for some extra features that will help you feel at one with nature. Considering a waterfall showerhead and some directional sprays that will massage specific areas of your body.
Find spa-like materials
Besides these bigger features, you can add some smaller items that you can also see in a spa. For instance, bamboo can find its place in your bathroom in many forms, from towels to bath mats you can step on once you’re done with your bath or shower. Then, look for a way to implement stone into the bathroom.
Your shower floor can be made of stone or you can look for a material that mimics this look and choose it for accessories like the toothbrush holder. A cheaper alternative might be getting some pebble tiles for your shower. Finally, we mentioned light wood earlier and you can use it for bath trays and mirror frames, let’s say.
Introduce plants
Of course, with so much talk of connecting to nature, we cannot overlook the importance of introducing plants to your bathroom. Luckily, there are many varieties that thrive in the bathroom environment and you don’t have to worry about high humidity or lack of direct sunlight. From bamboo and cast-iron plants to bromeliads and gardenias, the choices are truly countless.
Plus, not only will space’s aesthetics be boosted but you will also get a chance to make the most of the health benefits of these plants. They can improve your mental health and make the air quality better.
Think about the scents
Calming scents will help you create more Zen surroundings, as well. Whether you choose to use scented candles or oil diffusers, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you need to find the right smell that will promote calmness. Depending on your taste, you can choose from lemon, jasmine, and lavender, for example.
Play soothing sounds
While some people prefer complete silence when they want to unwind and practise mindfulness, other individuals prefer soothing sounds being played in the background. If you belong to the latter group, you can look for a calming playlist or make your own that you can play every time you go into the bathroom for a relaxing bath. Regardless of whether you prefer sounds of birds chirping, meditation music, or classical pieces, you will surely discover something that is right for you.
Make it an electronics-free zone
Other than the device you might need to play your soothing sounds, you should keep the bathroom free of electronics. Use this time to really disconnect from all the negativity that is constantly seen on social media and the news. Eliminate the stress for at least half an hour while you are in your Zen bathroom.
Keep it minimal
Finally, in order to keep this space peaceful and relaxing, you have to maintain it on a regular basis. So, in addition to cleaning and keeping the bathroom tidy, you should also consider minimalism. This approach is highly encouraged when creating Zen spaces and you will benefit from it in more ways than one. Space will not be cluttered and you will have an easier time keeping everything neat, which also means that it will be easier for you to relax.
To achieve this, make sure that everything has its place and that there is enough storage space where you can organize everything. Then, try to keep your decorations to a minimum. One piece of art is okay but you don’t want walls that are too busy, right?
From decluttering the space and opting for minimalism going forward to using natural colours and materials all the way to creating a spa-like environment, there are a lot of things you can do to make your bathroom more Zen in order to reach peace and mindfulness. Try these out and you will not regret it.
