5 Small Lifestyle Changes with Significant Health Benefits
- Details
- Written by Sophia Smith
It can be intimidating to imagine that you’d need to turn your lifestyle upside down in order to see any meaningful health changes. We envision ourselves completely ditching chocolate, abandoning wine, or hitting the gym six times per week as if we have the discipline and knowledge from day one, much like pro athletes.
The truth is, fitness and wellbeing do go hand in hand, but for us mere mortals, a little can indeed go a long way. That is why changing smaller habits that we commit to every day, or swapping them for smarter, less destructive behaviours can allow you to boost your health tremendously.
It’s tough to get started, so we’ve decided to suggest a few of the simplest lifestyle changes you can make that will have that powerful impact on the quality of your life and your health. Use them as a starting point, but try to think of other, equally potent ways to change your lifestyle in seemingly small ways that will bring great benefits to your wellbeing.
Take the stairs – and choose similar activities
Building your very own home workout can be too much of a hassle if you’re new to the world of fitness. When you lack the motivation and inspiration, let alone the time needed to research the most viable options for your situation, you should look for ways to seamlessly introduce more activities into your day that don’t disrupt your schedule.
Instead of taking the elevator or escalator, why not take the stairs? You can also cycle to work, spend a day with a friend taking a cup of coffee to go instead of sitting down, and you can organize walking lunches and walking meetings. You’ll burn calories, be in the fresh air, and you won’t pile on too much onto your already busy schedule.
Swap sugar with stevia
We’ve all been guilty of indulging in sweets a little bit too much, especially during the holidays. It’s hard to resist, right? Still, so many of our store-bought goodies contain insane amounts of processed sugar, so even ketchup and low-fat yogurt often contain plenty of this addictive substance. As it turns out, we’re likely consuming much more of it than we know.
To cut your intake or eliminate it altogether (although that might be too big of a step for some), you can swap your sugar with stevia and similar, less calorie-dense options. That way, you get to retain the flavour, but without the sugar rush and without wreaking havoc on your diet.
Try vaping instead of smoking
Tobacco can be extremely unhealthy for all of us, even for people around you who will definitely feel the consequences of passive smoking. The smell combined with the lung-related health issues and the fact that you reduce your quality of life all make smoking a habit that’s definitely worth ditching. However, for long-term smokers, going cold turkey can be impossible, so it’s much simpler and more effective to replace it with vaping.
Vaping is significantly less damaging for your lungs, it doesn’t have to use tobacco at all, and you can use various flavours and scents that are more pleasant for the people around you. You can try replacing cigarettes with the best disposable vape pen that comes in different flavours and doesn’t use tobacco. The lower dose of nicotine makes it perfect for slowly reducing your nicotine intake, as well, and you’ll soon find that you don’t crave cigarettes at all.
Schedule your sleep
For many people who are new to fitness, adding supplements of all kinds can help elevate their quality of life, but it’s not a shortcut to health. One key step many people skip in an attempt to feel better without added effort is focusing on sleep!
Try to use an app to track your sleeping patterns or simply commit to a sleeping schedule that’s consistent and good for you. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep every night, preferably at the same time, and you’ll see that your energy will be replenished, and you’ll feel much better in a matter of days.
Get an insulated water bottle
Consider this a double win, because you’ll not only manage to hydrate better during the day, but you’ll also be able to reduce plastic use in your life by eliminating plastic water bottles altogether. Getting an insulated water bottle raises your awareness of your need for more water (because so many people don’t hydrate properly), but it also gives you a clear idea as to how much water you’re actually drinking every day.
So, instead of counting those darn glasses and going back and forth, you can pour yourself an entire insulated water bottle to keep it fresh and refill only once or twice per day. A bottle will also help you stay hydrated when you work out, when you’re on the go, and it can surely keep your coffee warm for those long hours of work!
Whether you’re inspired to get in shape for summer and you want to start as early as possible, or you genuinely want to achieve more resilience and vibrancy in your life, these tips will help you get there. We’ve listed some of the most common habits that slow people down, so instead of going for major changes, you should start small and plan big. In a few months, you’ll notice these gradual changes giving you more energy and improving how you feel in your own skin!
