Sabian Symbol, Jones Pattern, Evolutionary Configurations, and More

This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this New Moon at 12 Virgo on September 2. This brings the Light of an unveiling which allows us renewal and recombining elements of our past into a new message to give and/or receive. While there’s some friction, it’s definitely a major fork in the road for more than a few people!

We’re now solidly in the new era which began at the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction at 22 Taurus in late April. That conjunction, in effect for 13 or more years, promised we have seen or will see the “white dove flying over troubled waters.” That symbolized a sign from Spirit that having endured our “ordeal,” we could now move into a new life. That is now an active element in our lives and will become more prominent in September.

With so many planets between Pisces and Virgo, keep forgiving and releasing the past while embracing a new view and a new message. We just went through some pretty intense squares in August, and now look forward to the oppositions from Virgo to Pisces, relieved by the tredeciles to Uranus, followed by trines to Uranus and Pluto. Use the Grand Earth Trines wisely, since things will begin to bog down as Mars begins to slow by November.

Be balanced in your approach to the unveiling and renewal going on. Be clear about what you want in the future. Some will be dealing with the results of previously held ideals. Share information and perspectives to get a well-rounded understanding of the nature of the parts relative to the whole.

The span between 11-15 Virgo is about “characterization” on the individual and spiritual level which prepares us for educating and being educated in the last half of Virgo. The next month is a time to get clear about letting go of old limitations and duties while accepting that a renewed life requires renewed skills and renewed views.

The Planetary Spread

In this chart, because the inner planets are between late Leo and early Libra in a 42+ degree span, that’s the main focus for the next 4 weeks. At this point, all the planets except Pluto are within the span between 17 Pisces and 6 Libra, creating a Bucket Jones pattern with Pluto as the handle. At this time we have planets in Capricorn, Pisces, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, and Libra.

Depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets, different months bring us different Jones Patterns. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.

Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Pluto in late Capricorn, and proceeds through Saturn in mid-Pisces, Neptune in late Pisces, Uranus in late Taurus and ends with Jupiter in mid-Gemini. (We don’t include TransPluto, since Jones didn’t use it in defining his patterns). Because we have 7 signs represented in about half the chart with one outside the main occupied span, this is a “Bucket” Jones Pattern.

So What is a “Bucket” Jones Pattern and how does it work?

A “Bucket Pattern” is a planetary spread with all the planets in about half the signs with one outside that span wide enough to be a handle. The energies of the occupied half are focused through the “handle,” or “nozzle,” in this case Pluto, termed the “focal determinator.” The handle, or focal determinator, represents the way to greater effectiveness, the cause to be embraced, the lack to be filled, or the way to use the total energies of this time in a focused manner.

Pluto is how we're going to "get a handle on things," or focus the potential of the rest of the planets, so if you have any doubt, express Aquarius! Pluto requires honesty and a willingness to look at core issues and do whatever is the right thing to do.

Dr. Jones states “the Bucket type indicates a particular and rather uncompromising direction in the life effort.” This pattern gives “interest in a cause,” with executive tendencies that will adapt allegiances to maximize results of the effort. He says “the Bucket type at its best reveals the real instructor and inspirer of others, and at its worst the agitator and malcontent.” This is the larger planetary pattern within which we’re all trying to do what we do.

We are also told this pattern is more about finding an effective release for energy within social settings, but also about the individual imposing their patterns on society rather than adapting to what is there. It’s about focused intention. So all of us can expect some sort of focused attention on the house where we have 30 Capricorn.

As this is Pluto’s final visit to Capricorn and it sits on a degree of “executive decision” within the half of Capricorn dealing with group work, accept responsibility for the decisions you’ve had to make since 2021 and be focused on that. The handle is showing us the seeds of things, as well as the longer process of managing the Aquarian seeds already sprouting in our world. And given the need for balance at this time, be clear about your intentions, since a firm intention to make an ideal real is more effective than ambivalence.

Saturn in the second decan of Pisces leads the occupied span for months to come. This indicates that the wisdom Neptune brought us in 2018-2022 is now presenting itself in Saturnine forms. This entry to the occupied part of the Bucket tells us to think about the deep wisdom we’ve been exposed to, as well as the blessing of knowing how to let things flow down the time stream as part of our social-spiritual renewal. This entry to the occupied part of the Bucket tells us to take a deep and broad view of compassionate forces at work, whether for blessing or releasing.

With Venus at 6 Libra as the closing planet to the span, we’ll finish experience with a sense of examining our visualizations past and present to make sure they’re really what we want to see made manifest. Whether dealing with receiving the results of past visualizations, or realizing we need to re-frame the vision in a more balanced way, we’re finding a new emotional or social archetype. This leads with actional and material Perpetuation and closes with social and emotional transfiguration which should give us insights into the decisions we must make at the core of our existence.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon

A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 12 Virgo, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the emotional, social, and cultural levels of life, and being the second decan of Virgo it has a sub-influence of Capricorn with an added dose of Venus. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.

The Sabian Symbol for the 12th degree of Virgo is “A bride with her veil snatched away.” In the original Jones class notes Dane Rudhyar published in The Astrology of Personality, he states this is a degree of "disclosure of the hidden fruitions of nature to him who dares and who loves,” “full appreciation of life,” and “penetration.”

In the Astrological Mandala, he goes on to say that this degree symbolizes “the penetrating and unveiling power of the trained mind.” He goes on to state that this represents the Yang force overpowering the Yin, forcing it to yield its secrets. He says the marriage is a symbol of training, bringing a “sociocultural factor” into the mix, with “the teacher-guru (representing) the priest who has performed the ritual.”

He offers that here “the masculine act balanced the feminine dream visualization” (of the previous symbol) and gives us the keyword “unveiling,” which can include “an unveiling of mysteries, long protected by secrecy.” He says this degree falls in the Span of Idealization, Act of Stabilization, and it’s the second degree in the Scene of Characterization on the Individual-Mental level.

Dr. Jones says this is a degree of “life’s demand that (we) continue at all times to prove (ourselves) in accordance with the claims” we assert in our relationships. He offers this shows us the need that we “continue along the path of experiences (we) have chosen … since the fact of (our) choice indicates a capacity for profiting from the consequences.”

He offers us the keyword INVITATION. He states that when operating in a positive manner, this degree “is absolute purity in motive and a completely unconditioned fullness of self-giving as a prophecy of high reward.”

From this symbol it seems the specific theme of the next month is the unveiling of a mystery, or an act that reveals something hidden before now. Be balanced as you give yourself permission to speak the message you’ve heard or are hearing.

Important Aspects

Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. Partile separating aspects show what’s been going on in the Now. This section covers only forming and partile separating aspects.

The Lunation is vigintile Mercury, quindecile Venus, quintile Mars, binovile Jupiter, opposition Saturn, biseptile Uranus, and sesquisquares Pluto; Mercury is sextile Mars, square Uranus, biquintile Neptune, and triseptile Pluto; Venus is tredecile Jupiter and quadranovile Saturn; and the Sun makes the same aspects as the Moon.

Outer planet aspects feature Mars biseptile Saturn, square Neptune, and quincunx Pluto; Jupiter is quindecile Uranus and binovile Neptune; Saturn is quintile Uranus and semisquare Pluto; and Uranus is sextile Neptune.

This month the friction is provided by 1 semisquare, 2 squares, 2 sesquisquares, and 1 quincunxe. While squares challenge “right action” at a turning point of a cycle, the semisquares are more about internal decisions and movement with personal inner crises, both public and private, which we must deal with.

Sesquisquares on the other hand create friction, agitation, and irritation in our world that involves others. In my experience sesquisquares are not necessarily associated with times of crisis, but they do seem to be times of no rest and spurs to act that may be inconvenient and aggravating. They definitely aren’t calm! And quincunxes force adjustments and sacrifices.

The long term pressure of Saturn semisquare Pluto is a time of serious internal decisions and movement related to the emergent structure of that which purifies everything. It’s been in play during the recent global conflicts. Adapt, purify, imagine, adjust, and show good humor while not letting the aggravation factor of the semisquare get to you.

Special Configurations in Evolutionary Astrology

This month we continue to have the rare circumstance of only 2 special evolutionary configurations, one involving the Lunation and both involving Saturn and Pluto.

1) The Lunation is opposed Saturn and cut into a semisquare/sesquisquares by Saturn, creating 3 points of a Great Octile. This is a “cutting and grinding” type of energy generating voids around 1-2 degrees of the Fixed signs, 12-17 degrees of the Mutable signs and 27-30 of the Cardinal signs.

2) Mars is biseptile Saturn and Mercury is triseptile Pluto. Ordinarily this would not be a configuration, but their zones of influence overlap. The two together create 7 “hot zones” where destiny will be on the move for those with a planet or point in those zones. They are 15-22 Pisces, 6-13 Taurus, 27 Gemini-4 Cancer, 19-26 Leo, 11-18 Libra, 2-9 Sagittarius, and 24 Capricorn-1 Aquarius.

Explaining Harmonics

Aspects in the same series are considered to be various stages of “harmonics” for each series. In the 7th harmonic aspect series of “destiny,” this month we have 3 biseptiles and 1 triseptile. In the 5th, 10th, 15th and 24th harmonic specialization series, we have 2 vigintiles, 3 quindeciles, 3 quintiles, 1 tredecile, and 1 biquintile. The 9th harmonic gives us 3 binoviles and 1 quadranovile, and in the 11th harmonic faith series there are none this month.

The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series (9th harmonic) aspects indicate things which need to be put on the shelf for a while, or that which has been waiting can now move forward. They represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects represent forks in the road of destiny, while the 11th harmonic elftile series indicate that faith is required to deal with transcending some dualities, issues and points of evolution where we must make a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality. This series tests our faith. Both the 7th and 11th series involve non-rational aspect values, bringing an element of irrationality in behavior and circumstances.

The quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th (decile and tredecile), 15th (quindecile), and 20th harmonic (vigintile) aspects are all specialization aspects. Element Balance and Who’s Leading the Sun

This month shows a balance in the elements, with the 10 traditional planets occupying 7 signs. We have 1 planet in Fire (inspiration and warmth), 4 planets in Earth (practical grounding), 3 in Air (relatedness and communicating), and 2 in Water (feelings and experiencing). This month we have half the signs represented.

Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, it’s fairly cool as Air and Earth predominate.

The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking

We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. This begins a new pattern. For now, as a process of moving through events, the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience over the next four weeks involves beginning activity with thinking, then deciding, then feeling.

This pattern leads with a vision, or an understanding, or a communication, and then makes decisions and actions based in those things. While it is tempting to move back into more thinking, communicating, and envisioning, it is more important to move from deciding or acting into feeling what we’re experiencing as a result of those actions and decisions, and bring those feelings to the surface of your consciousness and get clear about what you’re feeling and why.

By naming the feeling or experience, it will naturally lead us back to new information, new vision, new ideals, and new understanding upon which you can do your next set of decisions and actions. Then again name what you’re feeling. That way nothing will get bottled up through underuse, and you can move through experiences with power and clarity.

What is your vision or understanding telling you that you must do? Are your ideas inspiring action? Let your knowledge lead you to make clear decisions.

Summing Up

This New Moon will bring us awareness, adjustment, balance, clarity, renewal, and a new expression. Carry things through, listen to your inner voice telling you the message you are here to deliver. Visualize clearly, or accept what comes as a prior visualization.

We now move forward into a time of preparing for Mars to go retrograde. Be practical and efficient in September, since things take a turn in October with important adjustments as a result of specialized conditions.

While Saturn’s in Pisces, we are learning about the collective field and techniques of “non-local awareness” while developing our subtle senses of clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience. Forgiveness allows Divine Grace to manifest, and the quicker things flow down the timestream the less of an obstruction they’ll be.

Saturn in Pisces is teaching us how to demonstrate practical compassion as we live at a higher level than we used to. We are now living the life renewal we “heard as a call” last June, and are preparing for our symbolic “feast.”

We’ve finished a time of saying goodbye to old ways, places, and people, However, since all forms pass away in this impermanent world, this created space for new ways and new experiences since there’s more potential than there is in whatever has left. Celebrate the uplifting energies at play in your chart, and let go of memories which don’t serve the flow into the future. Feel the lightness of your unique evolutionary dance through space and time. We’re all moving from the interpersonal to the transpersonal level of focus.

Neptune is showing the way to “let go let god” as we approach the threshold of Neptune in Aries. For now, practice sensing the flow and simultaneity of knowing and experiencing a vaster connection to the collective field. This prepares us for receiving what we need to walk into the new collective reality of Neptune in Aries in 2025!

We now are encouraged to explore and enjoy the new life, new land, new field and new focus already rapidly unfolding. Be brave as you get clear about what dances you want to do and which things you’ll need to express as part of your new life roles to play. The future is now, and will get clearer over the next few weeks.

The Long View

In 2020 we entered a transition phase in human history. While we will be functioning within the Capricorn cycles we began then, we also have begun an era unknown to humanity since the 13th and 14th centuries. Even then, we were still in the depth of the Age of Pisces, so the awakening of new ideas then were relative to the old era, whereas what’s coming involves wave after wave of Aquarian energies, pushing us to the coming Great Age emerging in the second half of this century.

The long wave Aquarian pulses were initially set into motion by the Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius on March 31, 2020, marking the initiation of archetypal Aquarian preliminary structures offered by Saturn. The promise and potential of the new Aquarian pulse then began to expand into a greater social and cultural vision beginning at the Jupiter conjunction with Saturn, the Grand Mutation of the Solstice also at 1 Aquarius. So we have 20 years of Aquarian energies set into motion by that conjunction!

All Aquarian transits and conjunctions in 2022, 2023, and 2024 have given a new impetus and new expression to the Aquarian structures which took shape in 2021. Each transit strengthens the Pluto in Aquarius “generation” of the 21st century which lasts until 2043. As there will be a Jupiter conjunction with Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, we’ll see the “expansion of the Angels of the Age of Aquarius” at that time.

2021 opened a new adventure for all of us, and the long term “metamorphosis” we went through showed us what the beginning of the coming Age of Aquarius is about. 2022 helped us remember we are Beings of Light, a Superstar shining the Light of our Eternal Love into our world. We’re now expanding our spiritual knowledge, understanding, and effective forms of service, and have entered a new phase with Mars in a new Sun/Mars conjunction cycle.

New groups of Spiritual communities have formed since 2021, and are being given a boost this year. Those which are Aquarian in nature will be “lifted on the wings of angels” in 2024. Trust the process. Revolution is in the air! And when you find things and people of eternal worth, value them with all your heart.
