Sabian Symbol, Jones Pattern, Evolutionary Configurations, and More.

This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this New Moon at 13 Leo on August 4. This brings the Light of a mellow retirement from old dramas which strengthens our heart and gives us more life to enjoy. While it is a time of “expansion through sacrifice,” a spirit of honesty and sharing can bring us a type of philosophical fulfillment.

This month Mars occupies the position Jupiter occupied at the July New Moon. That promise for those who know how to maneuver out of nose dives to make a “3-point landing” in some quick way will now be activated. Use power in the direction of your choice rather than just be pulled along by momentum. And if something is going the wrong way, steer the process in a different direction. Mercury on the threshold of its retrograde station challenges us to use our creative imagination to understand the subconscious and unconscious realms, whether in self of another.

Last month Mars activated the new time, new way, and new day set into motion at the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction at 22 Taurus in late April. That conjunction, in effect for 13 or more years, promised we have seen or will see the “white dove flying over troubled waters.” That symbolized a sign from Spirit that having endured our “ordeal,” we could now move into a new life. That is now an active element in our lives and will become more prominent by September.

With so many planets between Pisces and Leo, keep forgiving and releasing the past while embracing the joys of life. Though there is a sense of impending conflict due to the squares from Gemini to Pisces coming in less than 2 weeks, share and compare information and offer what you can when you can. Release or at least review your preconceptions and you can find interesting elements of your own creative imagination. Be honest as you look back and connect the dots between the past and the future-in-the-making.

Because Mars is conjunct Jupiter in Gemini, we’re being propelled into a time of “the need for right action.” Like last month, because there is a strong sense of immediacy, stay centered in the “Here/Now,” face forward, bless the rapidly fading past, and feel the lightness of being free to move forward in your life!

The span between 11-15 Leo is about “combustion” on the individual and spiritual level which prepares us for the releases of the last half of Leo. The next month is a time to allow ourselves to receive the rewards of “growth from outer to inner realms” and share those experiences with others.

The Planetary Spread

In this chart, because the inner planets are between mid-Leo and early Virgo in a 21+ degree span, that’s the main focus for the next 4 weeks. At this point, all the planets except Pluto are within the 165+ degree span between 19 Pisces and 5 Virgo, creating a classic Bucket Jones pattern with Pluto as the handle. At this time we have planets in Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus, Gemini, Leo and Virgo.

Depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets, different months bring us different Jones Patterns. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.

Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Pluto in early Aquarius, and proceeds through Saturn in mid-Pisces, Neptune in late Pisces, Uranus in late Taurus and ends with Jupiter in mid-Gemini. (We don’t include TransPluto, since Jones didn’t use it in defining his patterns). Because we have 6 signs represented in about half the chart with one outside the main occupied span, this is a “Bucket” Jones Pattern.

So What is a “Bucket” Jones Pattern and how does it work?

A “Bucket Pattern” is a planetary spread with all the planets in about half the signs with one outside that span wide enough to be a handle. The energies of the occupied half are focused through the “handle,” or “nozzle,” in this case Pluto, termed the “focal determinator.” The handle, or focal determinator, represents the way to greater effectiveness, the cause to be embraced, the lack to be filled, or the way to use the total energies of this time in a focused manner.

Pluto is how we're going to "get a handle on things," or focus the potential of the rest of the planets, so if you have any doubt, express Aquarius! Pluto requires honesty and a willingness to look at core issues and do whatever is the right thing to do.

Dr. Jones states “the Bucket type indicates a particular and rather uncompromising direction in the life effort.” This pattern gives “interest in a cause,” with executive tendencies that will adapt allegiances to maximize results of the effort. He says “the Bucket type at its best reveals the real instructor and inspirer of others, and at its worst the agitator and malcontent.” This is the larger planetary pattern within which we’re all trying to do what we do.

We are also told this pattern is more about finding an effective release for energy within social settings, but also about the individual imposing their patterns on society rather than adapting to what is there. It’s about focused intention. So all of us can expect some sort of focused attention on the house where we have 1 Aquarius.

As Aquarius seeks the greater good for the greatest number, be clear about the larger work going on since 2021 and be focused on that. The handle is showing us the seeds of things, as well as the longer process bringing forth a better Aquarian world. A firm intention to make an ideal real is often more effective than ambivalence or second guessing the plan.

Saturn in the second decan of Pisces leads the occupied span for months to come. This indicates that the wisdom Neptune brought us in 2019-2022 when it was sitting at 19 Pisces, whether SRX or SD is now going to present itself in Saturnine forms over the next few weeks. This entry to the occupied part of the Bucket tells us to think about the deep wisdom we’ve been exposed to, as well as the blessing of knowing how to let things flow down the time stream.

This entry to the occupied part of the Bucket tells us to take a deep and broad view of compassionate forces at work, whether for blessing or releasing. With Mercury stationary retrograde at 5 Virgo as the closing planet to the span, we’ll close experience by reviewing our creative imagination and our ability to use divine discernment to see a different level of social or emotional effectiveness.” This leads with actional and material Perpetuation and closes with actional and material Characterization which should show us a different take on subconscious or unconscious energies.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon

A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 13 Leo, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the emotional, social, and cultural levels of life, and being the second decan of Leo it has a sub-influence of Sagittarius with an added dose of Jupiter. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.

The Sabian Symbol for the 13th degree of Leo is “An old sea captain rocking.” In the original Dr. Jones' class notes on the symbols published in The Astrology of Personality, Rudhyar says this degree symbolizes “Reward of growth from outer to inner realms,” Serenity through the overcoming of storms,” “Self-gained mellowness,” and “Retirement.”

We are told in The Astrological Mandala that this degree symbolizes "the quieted mind’s recollections of crises and joys long past,” where we can see how we’ve “steered the ship of (our) ego-consciousnesss through seas and storms, maintaining the integrity of (our) individual self-hood while in close contact with the collective Unconscious.” That enables us to distill wisdom from those trials and triumphs through contemplating past and present realities, gently rocking us into peace.

He gives us the keyword as “Quiet recollection.” He says it falls in the span of "Assurance” and it’s the synthesizing degree in the individual-mental level of the scene of Combustion in the Act of Stabilization.

According to Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, this degree is about humanity’s “great love for re-living (our) experiences in memory, and of (our) gift for achieving a mastery in advance of whatever new situations (we) may face” through seeing our relationships in terms of their potential. He goes on to say that with this degree we fight the ever-recurring battles in our world in our imagination over and over since we bring life under leash through mastering recurring challenges.

He offers us the keyword RETROSPECT. He states that this degree, when positive, is "each person’s unlimited capacity for calling up afresh the powers (we have) gained in (our) struggle toward self-fulfillment.”

From this symbol it seems the specific theme of the next month is one of contemplating past trials from an angle of peace as we get ready for greater heart adventures to come! There may be retrospections which can give us power and memory of dramas overcome and skills acquired in the past. What did you learn from those experiences? Those can lead to a sense of peace now.

Memories will yield a treasure trove, but don’t fight old battles anew. Find newer, fresher ways of the powers you’ve gained in your quest for self-fulfillment, and find peace in reviewing skills you’ve learned along the way and new forms of individual assurance or confidence which will stabilize your creativity, either as a result of new information or old ideas and truths seen in a new light.

Also, as Jupiter went SD in April 2015 at 13 Leo, with the Mercury going retrograde we may get flashbacks or echoes from that time. Reflect on the dramas of that time and how you retired from them, or connect the dots to see how the space you made in your life for new adventures then have placed you right where you are today.

Important Aspects

Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. Partile separating aspects show what’s been going on in the Now. This section covers only forming and partile separating aspects.

The Lunation is vigintile Venus, sextile Jupiter, biquintile Saturn, and sesquisquares Neptune; Mercury is conjunct Venus (out of sign), binovile Jupiter, trielftile Uranus, and triseptile Neptune; Venus is vigintile the Sun, binovile Mars, quadranovile Saturn, quincunx Neptune and quincunx Pluto; and the Sun makes the same aspects as the Moon.

Outer planet aspects feature Mars conjunct Jupiter, binovileSaturn, quintile Neptune, and quadraelftile Pluto; Jupiter is square Saturn, vigintile Uranus, and sesquisquares Pluto; Saturn is quintile Uranus and semisquare Pluto; and Uranus is sextile Neptune.

This month the friction is provided by 1 semisquares, 1 square, 3 sesquisquares, and 2 quincunxes. While squares challenge “right action” at a turning point of a cycle, the semisquares are more about internal decisions and movement with personal inner crises, both public and private, which we must deal with.

Sesquisquares on the other hand create friction, agitation, and irritation in our world that involves others. In my experience sesquisquares are not necessarily associated with times of crisis, but they do seem to be times of no rest and spurs to act that may be inconvenient and aggravating. They definitely aren’t calm! And quincunxes force adjustments and sacrifices.

The long term pressure of Saturn semisquare Pluto is a time of serious internal decisions and movement related to the emergent structure of that which purifies everything. It’s been in play during the recent global conflicts. Adapt, purify, imagine, adjust, and show good humor while not letting the aggravation factor of the semisquare get to you.

Special Configurations in Evolutionary Astrology

This month we continue to have the rare circumstance of only 2 special evolutionary configurations, neither involving the Lunation and both involving Venus.

1) Venus is the nozzle of a Yod, or Finger of God, created by it making two quincunxes to Neptune and Pluto. This is a major “multiple expansion through sacrifices” type of configuration, with Venus showing the release of the spiritual energies. 2) Venus is binovile Mars and quadranovile Saturn with Mars binovile Saturn, activating 3 points of a “9 Pointed Star of Spiritual Realizations.” This will bring things forward which have been gestating for a while, and also park some things on the shelf for another time. The zones most activated by this configuration are 1-2 Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, 7-12 Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, 17-22 Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio, and 27-30 Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Explaining Harmonics

Aspects in the same series are considered to be various stages of “harmonics” for each series. In the 7th harmonic aspect series of “destiny,” this month we have only 1 triseptile. In the 5th, 10th, 15th and 24th harmonic specialization series, we have 3 vigintiles, 2 quintiles, and 2 biquintiles. The 9th harmonic gives us 3 binoviles and 1 quadranovile, and in the 11th harmonic faith series there is1 trielftile and 1 quadrelftile.

The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series (9th harmonic) aspects indicate things which need to be put on the shelf for a while, or that which has been waiting can now move forward. They represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects represent forks in the road of destiny, while the 11th harmonic elftile series indicate that faith is required to deal with transcending some dualities, issues and points of evolution where we must make a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality. This series tests our faith. Both the 7th and 11th series involve non-rational aspect values, bringing an element of irrationality in behavior and circumstances.

The quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th (decile and tredecile), 15th (quindecile), and 20th harmonic (vigintile) aspects are all specialization aspects. Element Balance and Who’s Leading the Sun

This month shows a balance in the elements, with the 10 traditional planets occupying 6 signs. We have 3 planets in Fire (inspiration and warmth), 2 planets in Earth (practical grounding), 3 in Air (relatedness and communicating), and 2 in Water (feelings and experiencing). This month we have half the signs represented.

Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, it’s a perfect balance, with slightly more Fire and Air to keep things light and bright.

The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking

We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. This continues last month’s pattern. For now, as a process of moving through events, the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience over the next four weeks involves beginning activity with a decision or an action, following that with feeling or experiencing what follows that decision or action. Then after you feel what you need to feel, don’t simply go back to more actions, but instead move into new ideas, a new vision, new understanding, or a communication so that you come to a new way of viewing what’s going on.

So over the next four weeks we’ll lead with our decisions and actions, after which we’ll need to reference our feelings and experience about those decisions and actions. After we decide or act and then feel, we then need to find newer, more up to date information so we can get a new way of viewing those actions and our experience of those actions.

This pattern gets it in gear, and then goes to feelings to check out how we’re experiencing those decisions and actions. From there it seeks a new view, a new understanding, new information, and new interactions that can help you see clearly what must be done and how. Do what must be done, stay on top of how you’re feeling when you do it, and then find new understanding.

This is one of the two patterns which learns and teaches best by using anecdotes. Once something is explained, then practice doing it. Periods of solitude may be required after a critical decision or action. After that direct experience of feelings the results of your decision and action, then find the information from which a new understanding or vision will arise.

What is your vision or understanding telling you that you must do? Are your ideas inspiring action? Let your knowledge lead you to make clear decisions.

Because Mercury’s going retrograde, after we’ve done all our searching for a new vision or new understanding, it’ll be important to make a decision and stick to it. Mercury retrograde sometimes second guesses itself and reverses course when it shouldn’t. That said, things usually wind up where they should, even if it takes a roundabout route to get there!

Summing Up

This New Moon will bring us peace, spiritual understanding and stability, and a challenge to share our wisdom and our hearts with those who are our Spiritual Sisters and Brothers while adjusting to those who aren’t. Be honest with yourself and others as you find wisdom by looking back at many things. Use your creative imagination and mind power to steer the process of unfoldment, and visualize clearly the future you want to see made manifest in 2025.

Relief, refreshment, productivity, stability, and spiritual revelations are promised these next 4 weeks, so see how to steer your direction as you need to, accept concentrated doses of spiritual energy through receptivity and a willingness to act when needed on your own initiative.

We continue to stabilize and gather what we need for the challenging period in August when dynamic activity will be in the air, with some moving in the wrong direction or pushing when they should be backing down. In August, prepare to use the square to release the positive Saturn potential through understanding there is spiritual power in knowing how to generate compassion and closure.

While Saturn’s in Pisces, we are learning about the collective field and techniques of “non-local awareness” while developing our subtle senses of clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience. Forgiveness allows Divine Grace to manifest, and the quicker things flow down the timestream the less of an obstruction they’ll be.

Saturn in Pisces is teaching us how to demonstrate practical compassion as we live at a higher level than we used to. We are now living the life renewal we “heard as a call” last June, and are preparing for our symbolic “feast.”

We’ve finished a time of saying goodbye to old ways, places, and people, However, since all forms pass away in this impermanent world, this created space for new ways and new experiences since there’s more potential than there is in whatever has left. Celebrate the uplifting energies at play in your chart, and let go of memories which don’t serve the flow into the future. Feel the lightness of your unique evolutionary dance through space and time. We’re all moving from the interpersonal to the transpersonal level of focus.

Neptune is showing the way to “let go let god” as we approach the threshold of Neptune in Aries. For now, practice sensing the flow and simultaneity of knowing and experiencing a vaster connection to the collective field. This prepares us for receiving what we need to walk into the new collective reality of Neptune in Aries in 2025!

We now are encouraged to explore and enjoy the new life, new land, new field and new focus already rapidly unfolding. Be brave as you get clear about what dances you want to do and which things you’ll need to express as part of your new life roles to play. The future is now, and will get clearer over the next few weeks.

The Long View

In 2020 we entered a transition phase in human history. While we will be functioning within the Capricorn cycles we began then, we also have begun an era unknown to humanity since the 13th and 14th centuries. Even then, we were still in the depth of the Age of Pisces, so the awakening of new ideas then were relative to the old era, whereas what’s coming involves wave after wave of Aquarian energies, pushing us to the coming Great Age emerging in the second half of this century.

The long wave Aquarian pulses were initially set into motion by the Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius on March 31, 2020, marking the initiation of archetypal Aquarian preliminary structures offered by Saturn. The promise and potential of the new Aquarian pulse then began to expand into a greater social and cultural vision beginning at the Jupiter conjunction with Saturn, the Grand Mutation of the Solstice also at 1 Aquarius. So we have 20 years of Aquarian energies set into motion by that conjunction!

All Aquarian transits and conjunctions in 2022, 2023, and 2024 have given a new impetus and new expression to the Aquarian structures which took shape in 2021. Each transit strengthens the Pluto in Aquarius “generation” of the 21st century which lasts until 2043. As there will be a Jupiter conjunction with Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, we’ll see the “expansion of the Angels of the Age of Aquarius” at that time.

2021 opened a new adventure for all of us, and the long term “metamorphosis” we went through showed us what the beginning of the coming Age of Aquarius is about. 2022 helped us remember we are Beings of Light, a Superstar shining the Light of our Eternal Love into our world. We’re now expanding our spiritual knowledge, understanding, and effective forms of service, and have entered a new phase with Mars in a new Sun/Mars conjunction cycle.

New groups of Spiritual communities have formed since 2021, and are being given a boost this year. Those which are Aquarian in nature will be “lifted on the wings of angels” in 2024. Trust the process. Revolution is in the air! And when you find things and people of eternal worth, value them with all your heart.
