An Ungrateful Thanksgiving
- Details
- Written by AndEl
An Ungrateful Thanksgiving was written primarily for my American friends, but I invite my international friends to celebrate gratitude with us as well!
An ungrateful Thanksgiving is a sad, sad experience.
Usually, you can spot an ungrateful Thanksgiving in advance. Initially, we bemoan all of the work we must do in preparation. We don’t want to stop the flow of our life to grocery shop, cook or take care of our kids a few extra days in our busy week.
Once the holiday is upon us, an ungrateful Thanksgiving is one where we worry about how our relatives will act, what they will say or what kind of judgement we will have to endure around the dinner table on Thursday.
Ultimately, an ungrateful Thanksgiving is one where we simply go through the motions out of social norms and habits rather than truly celebrating.
Transform the ungrateful Thanksgiving this year
This week I invite you to join me and tune in to the joy of Thanksgiving, instead of the burden.
If you are fortunate enough to have friends or family to celebrate with this week, take some time to unplug and really be with them. If you are on your own, reach out and connect with the people you love somehow.
Slow down at work. Put the hustle and bustle on the back burner as much as you can. Tune in to what you are truly grateful in life and create more memories than you do to-do lists and reasons to be irritated.
Thanksgiving is the one true holiday here in the United States that is exclusively dedicated to sharing love and gratitude. When we attend to this holiday from a place of chaos, negative expectation and burden, we totally miss the mark.
Keeping perspective over the holidays
So, let’s keep Thanksgiving in perspective this year.
It’s ok if the turkey takes too long to cook. It’s ok if Uncle Bob is inappropriate or Grandma asks too many questions. You can still have wonderful Thanksgiving if you are far from home or if you have to take a few days off from your progress at work.
No matter where you are or who you are with, you can enjoy the spirit of this week. After all, you have many things to be grateful for.
Remember, Thanksgiving is about appreciating people and giving thanks for the blessings in our life. Be grateful for what you have this Thursday. Enjoy the people in your life. Give thanks for the clothes on your back, the shelter that keeps you warm and the joy you experience.
Who knows what will be here next Thanksgiving, so let’s try to stay present and grateful to what we have right now.
XO, Andrea
