Mollusk Morphogenesis

Mollusk Morphogenesis

Mollusk Morphogenesis

There is a film that has
changed my two-legged
life with such gentle beauty,
I’m made into a creature
I didn’t know existed.

Busy being the human
having a spiritual journey,
the energy having a material journey,
I realize I've spent an inordinate
amount of lifetime scrutinizing
my every move in my
space suit of flesh.

So caught up in
not being what I thought
I was supposed to be in
any given moment, I was
missing the moment
of being what I am.

Formless.

Like you.

Buying into the envelope
we are sealed into at birth
in this earth life as the me I see,
I could not see—rather than
conceptualize—see that I was
not that which housed me.

My Octopus Teacher
showed me that my form
is just a container. One of so
marvelous a many. A sweater
knit from my imagining what
being knit would feel like.

What being a latitude
in an east to west world
would feel like.

What being hung
on a hanger of bone
would feel like.

A vertebrate's spine
puts me upright when
I choose to stand, propelled
when I choose to run, supine
when I seek to lie.

In another spinal life
I've been a great blue whale,
ruddering my backbone to range
the wide blue depths of this blue dot
coloring the ranging heavens.

Untold other lives,
in other stages of life,
I’ve lived as an
invertebrate
lives.

All life that is
earth life starts
invertebrately, if
unmemorably,
I dare say.

This life has led me
to see myself outside
of my self, so oft
imperceptibly.

Seeing the cast rather than
the clay, the liminal hiding the
ephemeral, the ineffable,
not just in my form,
but my behavior.

In my preferences.
My attachments.
My judgments.
My disbeliefs
cloaked in their
greasepaint of
superimposed
limits, patterns.

In my addiction
to seeing myself as I
am seen—whether by
my unseeing eyes
or yours.

To seeing my
definition wherever
I looked rather than
that which it
defines.

This octopus, and
the man who came to
see her beyond the form
that defined her, to love her
within the form that defined her,
opened my eyes to seeing
myself for the first time.

Through her marvelous
eyes, her marvelous form,
I am transformed into
any shape, color,
pattern I choose
to express

through me,
as me.

Indistinguishable
from the choice that
chooses deep
within me

responding
effortlessly to
my surroundings
rather than seeking
to shift the shape
of them.

Funny that it’s taken
half a century to recognize
that I, too, have this
invertebrate power
to see, to be,
whatever
I wish.
Evince.

Just
like
that.

Like she.
Like he who
saw her being
who she is—now
horned, now a wheel,
now a ball of seabed bits—
and inexplicably fell
in love with that
at first sight.

A strange
and wonderful
form of love.

Showing me,
teaching me how to
fall in love with the strange
and wonderful form
of love that
I am

as
I am.

>>

(I highly recommend this brilliant film currently streaming on Netflix; a documentary that is a love story, that is a primer on “the other,” even and especially when that other is our very own self. Never more instructive nor prescient than now. A gift you'll give yourself and the whole wide worlds.

Eve Moore: Once a professional writer of advertising, I saw the light & it has shown me words of a different nature. And so I take them down & offer them up. And all is well.

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
