Trauma – physical and emotional – is an inevitable part of life. When we experience traumatic events, it is possible for a portion of the soul to separate, taking with it a part of our essential self. This soul loss can manifest in a number of ways, including illness, emotional arrest, fear, and insecurity. Fortunately, it is possible to enter non-linear time – the timeless now – to recover the lost soul part, heal events that happened in the past, and even correct the course of destiny.

Trained both in psychology and the traditions of the Laika (master seers of the Inka nation), I’ve found that one soul-retrieval session can accomplish what may take many years to heal employing psychotherapy. This is because the soul-retrieval journey involves renegotiating obsolete soul contracts and discarding limiting beliefs. In addition, the language of the soul is very different from what we use in therapy and counseling. It’s rich in image, myth, archetypes, and mystery; full of poetry and magic, it speaks to intuition and love.

My own journey into shamanism was guided by my desire to become whole. In healing my own soul wounds, I learned to love myself and others. Walking the path of the wounded healer, I learned to transform the grief, pain, anger, and shame that lived within me into sources of strength and compassion. At the Light Body School, every student embarks on a quest for self-healing in which they transform soul wounds into sources of power and wisdom.

The Laika divide the collective unconscious of all humanity into three parts: the Lower, Middle, and Upper Worlds. We live, work and raise our families in the Middle World; the Upper World is the invisible domain of our destiny and our spirit; the Lower World, where the record of all human history is held, is the realm of the soul. Thus, to recover a lost soul part, it is necessary to journey to the Lower World.

To retrieve a destiny derailed by trauma, one journeys to the Upper World. The journey itself is a unique state of consciousness entered through guided meditations and breathing exercises. It allows us to revisit the past to heal events that occurred long ago and to find more desirable destinies for ourselves and our loved ones.

Quantum physics has shown that the past and the future are connected in a noncausal but meaningful way. When we send two photons of light in opposite directions and grab one with a polarizer, it affects the other instantaneously, suggesting that no time or distance intervenes between them. This is nonlocality, or the ability to influence events across a distance or through time. The proof of nonlocality at the quantum level is a recent scientific breakthrough, yet the Laika have long understood how distant events are linked.

For the Laika, time zigzags between tomorrow and yesterday: It’s like a river coursing lazily to the sea, and deep under its surface there’s a tide streaming backward to its source and forward into infinity. While most people are content to float along the current, gifted individuals learn how to journey along these “time tides” to correct events that occurred in the past and to influence the future. We can actually look into the future for the answer to a present question, and it will orchestrate synchronicity and serendipity to lead us to the solution. The future always spills into and can inform the present – if we invite it to.

As seers who perceive the invisible world of energy and spirit, the Laika understand that everything in the universe is made of light, and that it forms and creates matter. In some things, light is bound very tightly, as in trees and stones, while in others it’s more fluid, such as in rivers or in sunlight. Today, scientific discoveries confirm that when we look deeply into the heart of matter at the most fundamental level, all we find is vibration and light.

So, by working directly with the soul and the spirit, we can bring about change on all other levels, including the body and mind. Change on the level of the spirit transforms the world.
