Buffalo energy is very powerful and demanding. The teaching of buffalo is not to push the tide, to be patience and allow Great Spirit to give. Buffalo is a holy energy.  It is the Great Spirit in form. Buffalo signals a reconnect with life.  Buffalo medicine is knowing that abundance is always present and to honor the sacredness in all life. The buffalo is a symbol of manifestation. Their large heads represent intelligence of a higher order and their strong bodies ground them to the earth. They are the uniting force between the everyday and the divine.  Both the bulls and the cows have horns as well as humped shoulders. Horns grow out of the head and extend to the sky indicating a connection with a higher intelligence. Humps are often symbolic of stored energy locked within the body. When defending against danger, the cows will form a defensive circle around the calves and the bulls will form a circle around the cows. This symbolizes the buffalo's protective instincts to defend and honor life. Buffalo people have a deep, innate sense of trust in the Universe. They know that they have the power and strength to manifest that which is good and beautiful Affirming that belief to others in every word and action.

Buffalo represents plenty. It is about receiving and giving prosperity, standing one’s ground and protection of natural resources. People who have Buffalo energy often find themselves shouldering some very heavy burdens. Always feeling drained and exhausted trying to do for everyone except self. It is important that Buffalo people learn how to teach others to be empowered and to rely on their own abilities and strengths.  During the winter months Buffalo will use its massive head and shoulders to move snow out of the way so it can feed on the plants below. We too need to learn how to move those things in our lives that are blocking what we are seeking.

The legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman tells of how the People had lost the ability to communicate with the Creator. The Creator sent the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman to teach the People how to pray with the Pipe. Legend says that long ago, two young men were out hunting when from out of nowhere came a beautiful maiden dressed in white buckskin. One of the hunters looked upon her and recognizing her as a Wakan, or sacred being, lowered his eyes. The second hunter approached her with lust in his eyes desiring her for his woman. White Buffalo Calf Woman beckoned the lustful warrior to her, and as he approached a cloud of dust arose around them causing them to be hidden from view. When the dust settled, nothing but a pile of bones lay next to her. As she walked toward the respectful young hunter, she explained to him that she had merely fulfilled the other man's desire, allowing him, within that brief moment, to live a lifetime, die and decay.

White Buffalo Calf Woman instructed the young man to go back to the People and tell them to prepare for her arrival to teach them of the way to pray. The young hunter obeyed. When White Buffalo Calf Woman arrived with the sacred bundle (the prayer pipe) she taught the People of the seven sacred ways to pray- Sweat Lodge for purification; the Naming Ceremony/child naming; the Healing Ceremony; the adoption ceremony for making new relatives; the marriage ceremony; the Vision Quest and the Sundance Ceremony to pray for the well-being of all the People.

When the teaching of the sacred ways was complete, White Buffalo Calf Woman told the people she would return for the sacred bundle that she left with them. Before leaving, she told them that within her were the four ages, and that she would look back upon the People in each age, returning at the end of the fourth age, to restore harmony and spirituality to a troubled land. She walked a short distance, she looked back towards the people and sat down. When she arose they were amazed to see she had become a black buffalo. Walking a little further, the buffalo laid down, this time arising as a yellow buffalo. The third time the buffalo walked a little further and this time arose as a red buffalo. Walking a little further it rolled on the ground and rose one last time as a white buffalo calf signaling the fulfillment of the White buffalo Calf prophecy.

The changing of the four colors of the White buffalo Calf Woman represents the four colors of man--white, yellow, red and black. These colors also represent the four directions, north, east, south and west. The sacred bundle that was left to the Lakota people is still with the People in a sacred place on the Cheyenne River reservation in South Dakota. It is kept by a man known as the Keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, Arvol Looking Horse. If a white buffalo appears, it is a sign that prayers have been heard, or a period of wealth is about to begin. The Buffalo will only come to you if you are already on the right path.

The upcoming energies ask you to come into balance within yourself, not worrying if thy neighbor is in balance, or thy husband is in balance or thy boss is in balance. Balance begins and ends with you. It is not your concern what another is doing, as their learning experience is personalized.  Do not busy yourself with the details of changing others.  Busy yourself with honoring your own choices, your own energies and your own challenges.  It is only when you have swept in front of your own place can you sweep for another.

Each of you has come to a boxed canyon as you enter the end of the year sidestepping 12 months of canned emotion and bottled angers. You seem to be at the end of your rope and choices. The pressure within you builds as you try to move past barriers in your shark invested personal reef.  Understand dear ones, you are being asked to change the molecular structure of what blocks your way, to walk through what keeps you less than, to stand strong as you  separate the turbulent seas of your life. 

Imagine all is but a mirage and fleeting fantasy, that changes moment to moment, and so is your universe. When you pull your life force away from what blocks you, and keeps you less than, you take away its power.  Walk in empowerment knowing that you can shift what you commanded into existence.  For every item in your life, in your closet, on your floor, and on your body – you commanded into existence.  You created into the physical world. 

I Buffalo Calf Woman ask you to love all of your creations --for God does not rebuke even one of his creations – he loves all of them, no matter how much the creation does not love itself.  You are asked to take the posture of Creator and love what you have brought forth into your life.
