A Love Story

A Love Story

Several decades ago, there lived a sweet lady, our Cuban neighbor in South Florida, who filled our lives with love and warmth.

One day, over a heartwarming spread of café con leche and tostadas, she shared a poignant tale that touched my soul. It was a story of deep devotion and a bittersweet farewell that left tears streaming down my cheeks.

She spoke of her beloved husband, who had departed from this world a decade before. Every morning, in a beautiful ritual of affection, she would rise with the sun and lovingly prepare his cherished Cuban coffee. With tenderness in her heart, she would bring the fragrant brew to their cozy haven, where he would await her with open arms.

As the sun’s golden rays danced upon their room, they would savor the rich aroma of the coffee, accompanied by the rustling of the morning newspaper. Together, they would embrace the new day, their spirits intertwined, finding solace in each other’s presence. It was a simple act, but it spoke volumes of their deep connection and unwavering bond.

One particular morning, as the world woke to a gentle breeze, she performed her routine. She leaned in, softly placing a kiss upon his lips, bidding him good morning. They shared sweet words about their dreams. She disappeared into the kitchen, brewing their beloved elixir, the essence of their shared moments that was a routine for over forty years.

Returning to their sanctuary, she cradled her cup and his, eager to relish the harmonious ritual they cherished. He took his time to drink his cup. She then left to shower.

But as she emerged from the shower, her heart skipped a beat. He lay there, peacefully asleep, his tranquil face a portrait of serenity. Hours passed, and he remained in a deep slumber.

An unsettling feeling gnawed at her heart, urging her to awaken him, for they had an important doctor appointment in a few hours. As she gently nudged him, her voice filled with concern, she realized that the hands of fate had already claimed him. He had slipped away, leaving her with a heart heavy with love and loss. On his nightstand was the empty cup of coffee.

In that moment, as she gazed around the room, it seemed as if every brushstroke of color had transformed, infusing the space with an ethereal essence. Though her beloved husband was no longer present in his physical form, she could still feel his spirit, his essence lingering within their shared sanctuary.

In that tender moment, as she held his lifeless form, she whispered her final words of devotion, her love etching itself upon the tapestry of their shared existence. Her eyes, filled with a sea of tears, reflected both the pain of separation and the beauty of their shared journey.

Through her sorrow, her spirit remained unyielding, carrying within it the flame of their love that would never fade. She treasured those mornings, those stolen moments of intimacy, and held them close to her heart as a testament to the depth of their connection. Their story, though filled with grief, spoke volumes of a love that transcended the boundaries of time.

And so, whenever I sit with a cup of Cuban coffee, its aroma enveloping my senses, I am reminded of that dear neighbor and the love she shared. Her tale serves as a gentle reminder to cherish every precious moment, for love has the power to weave a tapestry of memories that can withstand the test of time.

For love, true love, knows no boundaries. It weaves its threads through time and space, connecting souls in a tapestry that transcends the limits of mortality. This moment is all we can count on. Cherish it with love, respect, laughter and devotion.

I love you.
