Tale of the Old Farmer

A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need correct. ~ A Course in Miracles
Long ago I heard the tale of an old farmer and his wife. They lived far out in the country and, once a month or so, would drive into the nearest town for food, supplies, etc.
One day as they were on their monthly trip to town, the wife looked over at her husband in the driver’s seat. “You know,” she said, “we used to sit so close to each other whenever we went to town. Now we don’t.”
“What happened?” she asked.
The old farmer looked her squarely in the eye and said, “I haven’t moved.”
I often think of that old tale when folks tell me (and I hear this regularly) how lost and alone they feel in this crazy, chaotic world.
They wonder if God has abandoned humanity, and is just letting it drift to its doom. They’ve lost all hope of finding God before they cross beyond the veil of death.
Spirit
You don’t have to wait till you’re on death’s doorstep to feel nearer to God. He has never left you. He is closer than close to you. Like the old farmer, He has not moved. He is within you. He is you.
All that’s happened is you’ve created the illusion he has moved and abandoned you. You’ve created the illusion you and God are separate.
As the words of the song Johnny chose for today go, “nearer my God to Thee.” He has never been nearer to you than He is right now.
Once you awaken from the dream and realize that, you will find deep peace—the peace that surpasses understanding. You will have returned to the home you never truly left.
All is well. It always has been.

One of my favorite violinists and conductors is the legendary André Rieu. Here he and his orchestra are playing a hauntingly beautiful version of Nearer My God To Thee.
