How Walking Barefoot Helps Heal Inflammation
- Details

The energetic grounding technique simply involves placing your feet directly on the ground. No shoes and no socks. With this simple action, you immediately draw a strong negative charge from the Earth. This charge is rich in electrons, which act as antioxidants and destroy free radicals in the body.
Subjective reports that natural walking barefoot on the ground strengthens a person's health and improves their psychological state can be found in the literature and healing practices of various cultures from around the world. Still, many people are reluctant to walk outside barefoot.
Grounding is essentially a small return to nature and to the roots. Naturally, we don't have any other kind of protective covering on our feet besides the harder skin. We are made by nature to walk barefoot. When you put your bare feet on the ground, you can absorb many negative electrons through your feet and thus strengthen your health.
The human body is highly conductive. Like the Earth, we are powered by electromagnetic energy. Our nervous system is like an internal conduit that transmits data throughout the body. We also contain minerals and hold water in our tissues, so we're a bit of a walking, talking conductive battery.
Every tissue in the body has its own charge, which it tries to maintain in order to fulfill its function. For example, inflammation is a natural function of the body, which is made possible by a type of white blood cell called neutrophils. Neutrophils deliver reactive oxygen species (also known as free radicals) to the site of injury or need. These free radicals carry a positive charge that rips apart harmful bacteria and breaks down damaged cells to make room for healthy cells to repair tissues.
Therefore, inflammation should not be considered a disaster, but a way for the body to heal itself. The real problem arises when the activity of free radicals is not controlled and some of these free radicals escape into the surrounding tissue and damage healthy cells as well. This is actually the essence of chronic inflammation that most people deal with.
Cell damage occurs every day, simply by virtue of being alive. Damaged heart cells, liver cells, muscle cells and others trigger an oxidative burst of free radicals when they die, which will help clean them up. It is a body chemistry in which a positive charge naturally occurs. However, it needs to be neutralized, which earthing can do.
A study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health titled Earthing: Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth's Surface Electrons states that grounding could represent a potential treatment and solution to a number of chronic degenerative diseases.
She concluded that simple contact with the Earth through being outside barefoot could serve as a natural and highly effective environmental strategy against chronic stress, autonomic dysfunction, inflammation, pain, poor sleep, heart rhythm variability disorders, blood hypercoagulation, and many common health disorders including cardiovascular diseases.
Research to date supports the idea that grounding the human body may be an essential element in maintaining health, along with sunlight, clean air and water, a nutritious diet and physical activity.
Grounding further reduces blood viscosity, which is a major factor in cardiovascular disease. One study , published in the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine , even concluded that grounding may be a major factor regulating the endocrine and nervous systems.
Grounding reduces or even prevents the main symptoms of inflammation after an injury: redness, heat, swelling, pain and loss of function. Rapid resolution of painful chronic inflammation has been confirmed in twenty studies using medical infrared imaging. The main hypothesis is that the body's connection to the Earth allows free electrons from the Earth's surface to spread around and into the body where they can have antioxidant effects. Scientists hypothesize that these mobile electrons create an antioxidant microenvironment around the site of the wound being repaired, thereby slowing or preventing reactive oxygen species delivered by the oxidative burst from causing collateral damage to healthy tissue and preventing or limiting the formation of an inflammatory barricade. It is also believed that electrons from the Earth can prevent or resolve hidden chronic inflammation as well.
There are dozens of studies that confirm the physiological effects of grounding. They also mention anti-aging effects, improving heart health, improving sleep and much more. Yet, unfortunately, many people living in developed countries are rarely grounded.
With grounding, the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol also begins to normalize. Cortisol is linked to your body's response to stress and helps control blood sugar levels. Regulates metabolism, helps reduce inflammation and aids in memory formation.
How you can ground yourself
We all spend most of our time walking on the ground in shoes with rubber or plastic soles. These materials are insulators that are used to insulate electrical wires. At the same time, they disconnect you from the earth's flow of electrons, to which we should naturally be connected. If you wear shoes with leather soles or vegan leather, or walk barefoot on sand, grass, soil, or ceramic tiles, you will be grounded. If you walk on asphalt, rubber, plastic, vinyl, then you will not be grounded.
Walk outside in bare feet if possible. Walk barefoot on the dirt and let your body absorb the energy from the ground. Consciously accept sunlight as well. In ten minutes, you can recharge your kidneys and at the same time get your daily dose of vitamin D.
