5 Essential Health and Safety Tips for Digital Nomads
- Details

Not having a set workplace comes with its benefits for sure, as you have a chance to combine your love for traveling with earning money. However, considering how much time you spend on the road, working, and immersing yourself in the new environment, maintaining your health can sometimes be challenging. It’s not something you should ever sacrifice, though. So, to help you maintain the lifestyle of a digital nomad while staying safe and healthy, here are five essential tips you should follow.
1. Stay active
When you’re a digital nomad, you inevitably spend a lot of time sitting. Needless to say, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to more than a few health issues, which is why you should try to be as active as you can. So, while working, take a break every hour just to stretch your legs and keep the blood flowing. Moreover, take advantage of hotel gyms when they are available. After all, there’s no point in spending money on a gym membership if you can’t take full advantage of it. Also, instead of using public transport, explore the city by foot whenever you have the time. Walking can keep you physically fit, and it can help you clear your mind.
2. Eat well
When you’re always on the move, it’s easy to take shortcuts and order fast food or live on snacks. Some nomads even turn to weight loss supplements, knowing that their diet cannot keep them in good shape. As convenient as it is to live on fast food, this is one shortcut that you should not be taking. Whenever you can, you should cook your own meals – and there are many healthy meals that don’t take long to prepare. Of course, you can always eat in restaurants, but doing that all the time would leave a dent in your wallet. Unfortunately, restaurants that are both good and affordable are not always that easy to find. So, look for accommodation with the kitchen, prepare your own food whenever you can, and always opt for healthier snacks like nuts and fruits.
3. Insure yourself
Insurances vary across the world, but since you are a digital nomad, you have more freedom to choose yours. For example, if your job often takes you to Asia, you should consider endowment insurance in Singapore. Of course, this isn’t to say that your life is in any danger just because you travel a lot. However, if you do have a home and a family, you want to know that they won’t be left high and dry if something does happen to you. So, be insured, but keep yourself healthy and safe so that the endowment never actually gets used.
4. Change your surroundings
Your environment can greatly affect your mood and productivity; if it’s always the same, you’re bound to get bored of it sooner or later. One of the biggest problems of those who work online is feeling as if they’re not a part of any social circle, which eventually leads to loneliness and even depression. This is why you should change your surroundings from time to time. For instance, working in a café can make you feel more productive, and it can give you a sense of not being alone. Even if you don’t actually talk to anybody there, the social atmosphere would still make you feel like you’re engaged in the community. So, don’t limit yourself to your room – find a relaxing place from where you can work, and take a break from time to time just to observe the world around you.
5. Spend time with other people
Your mental health matters as much as your physical one, if not even more. As mentioned, being a digital nomad often implies working alone from the comfort of your own room. As convenient as it is, it can make your social life suffer. So, make sure to find time for some socializing. Luckily, making friends all over the world is much easier now than it used to be, thanks to the Internet. So, wherever you are, if you have a friend there, go for a cup of coffee. Also, look for people who are in the same field of work as you, and try to stay in touch. You can share experiences, give each other advice, and keep each other sane when the work gets tough. After all, no matter what you do, it’s always easier when you’re not doing it alone.
No matter what kind of job you have, it’s important to find balance. It’s okay to eat unhealthy sometimes, and there’s nothing wrong with staying in your room all day if you don’t feel like going out. However, such days should be an exception and not a habit. Your health should always come before convenience, so whenever possible, do what you know is best for your body and mind.
